Hi Heather

I just got back from China, If you are thinking about it, then just go. You would be hard pressed to find a better trip, it is a trip of a lifetime.

If you have ever used packing cubes, then take them. Its a full on tour and you wont get time to unpack at every hotel. You just take out the cube(s) you need for your current location.

You would be best taking layers of clothing, the thinner / lighter the better.

You will need a good pair of shoes for walking, and a pack it jacket as you may need that particularly in Chengdu where is a wetter area (the pandas love it))

You will be buying a lot of souvenirs, you won't believe be now, but you will, my suitcase was about 3 kilos heavier when I left China and I was one of the frugal ones. So you need an expanding case.  ;)

Everything Chris said! Only my suitcase came home 5kg heavier.... Layers definitely a good idea, as are packing cubes and sensible walking shoes with a good grip (especially for the damp areas).

In our group, people tended to dress up a bit for evening meals so prepare some smart casual outfits for that if you want to - but if you prefer to stay casual, that's fine too.

Air China don't provide much in the way of extras on the overnight flight (just a blanket) so if you like eyemask/ear plugs/cosy socks, take your own. The hotels there usually have travel toothbrush and toothpaste so it's handy to take one for the flight back.

There a great little bar round the corner from the hotel in Shanghai (turn left as you exit the front door)  - looks tiny from the outside but has multiple floors and really quirky rooms to relax in, including one just with floor cushions. And a bell so you can ring for service if you don't want to trek up and down stairs to get a fresh drink!

If you can't be without social media, what's app, Google for the length of your holiday, I recommend signing up to a VPN before you go. I used Express VPN (others are available) and it cost about £10. It allowed me to stay in contact with my family while I was away and I'm glad I had it.

We were there in October and weather was fine - not too hot, not too cold, and air quality was generally ok. I'd taken face masks in case it was really smoggy but didn't need them. I don't know what weather will be like in May but worth researching to make sure you get the best time of year (I guess May would be good!)

It's a fab trip - genuinely so many highlights and you won't believe just how much you cram into your visit. Hope you have a wonderful time!

Hi Heatherjane,

I second what Chris and Suzy-Suzy have said.

We were all on the same trip.

The trip to China is a once in a life time trip. Just go for it.

Our tour guides were brilliant and the tour manager Jennie was one of the best tour manager I have had.

And definitely shopping is great in China especially in Shanghai.

Have a lovely time.

Hi all,

Thanks you for the replies. I am doing this trip next month - not long now!! All of your hints are greatly appreciated.

Would you suggest doing the evening add on trips (e.g. Hutongs by rickshaw) or just use the time to rest/relax/socialise? Did anyone do the extra water town trip?

How many people were in your travel group and what age ranges?

Hi

Glynis - Didn't need injections during my trip. But I would check with the WHO website, if your are going on the Yangtze cruise then that might be different, especially if you are going into rural China.

Shanghai by night, xian by night and the hutongs rickshaw are musts. I didn't do the face changing or dynasty shows, and didn't feel I missed much (my opinion)

There would be about 30 of you.

Hi Gynis

I spoke to my doctors surgery and had to fill in a travel vaccinating form and the nurse got back to me to say I needed a booster for Tetanus and Typhoid. The rest were all up to date. Good Luck
