I am booked on the Namibia trip on 12th Oct. Please can someone give me an idea about which currency to take, I am getting different ideas from different travel agents. I have been told they can't get Namibian dollars, i was going for South African Rand but Thomas Cook said no just change sterling over there, another says American dollars.

Hopefully someone who has been will know. Thanks Mandy

Hi Mandy,

I'm on the same trip - only 9 of us! You can't get Namibian currency here, so I got some South African Rand. I also always have US dollars, and will have sterling as well - covers all eventualities! Just about to make an appointment with my practice nurse as we will need anti-malarials for Etosha I think.

See you in 3 weeks!

Cheers,

Hils

Hi Mandy,

The easiest thing to do is bring South African rand, as they are legal tender in Namibia.  One rand = one Namibian dollar.  You will get your change in either rand or dollars but make sure you get rid of any Namibian currency before you leave.  One final thing - make sure your rand is the latest issue (with Mandela's face on them) rather than the previous ones, which had animals, as these are no longer accepted.

I did this tour in May last year and had a fantastic time - I am sure you will too!

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Hils,

I was advised to use Malarone, starting the day before we went to Etosha.  Thankfully we encountered very few mossies but better safe than sorry!

All the best,

Bob

Hi Hils and Bob,

I may well take  some of both to be on the safe side but Rand with Mandela's face on [thanks Bob ].

I have already got my Malarone tablets to start taking them before Etosha. I got mine from Asda phamacy as they do it all without presciption.

see you soon hils
