I've just returned from Berlin, and wanted to alert anyone who might be going of a possible scam.
Whilst walking through Museumsinsel (Museum island) and Alexanderplatz alone (during the day), I was approached several times by people asking for a signature and donation. They shove a clipboard in your face, with a sheet of paper in German and English that says they are campaigning for disabled access (there is wheelchair symbol in the corner of the paper). The paper asks for Name, Country, and Donation.
I suspect this is a scam because:
- They seem to only approach people walking alone.
- They do not wear any official gear (t-shirt, badge, lanyard) and do not explain the cause.
Although I said "Nein, danke", they followed me several steps and continued to pester for a contribution (I just ignored them). This was more a nuisance than dangerous (both Museum Island and Alexanderplatz are busy areas), but I wanted to warn other travellers of this and be aware of your belongings.
Please don't be put off going to Berlin. Apart from this incident, I felt safe exploring the city on my own.
