I've just returned from Berlin, and wanted to alert anyone who might be going of a possible scam.

Whilst walking through Museumsinsel (Museum island) and Alexanderplatz alone (during the day), I was approached several times by people asking for a signature and donation. They shove a clipboard in your face, with a sheet of paper in German and English that says they are campaigning for disabled access (there is wheelchair symbol in the corner of the paper). The paper asks for Name, Country, and Donation.

I suspect this is a scam because:

  • They seem to only approach people walking alone.

  • They do not wear any official gear (t-shirt, badge, lanyard) and do not explain the cause.

Although I said "Nein, danke", they followed me several steps and continued to pester for a contribution (I just ignored them). This was more a nuisance than dangerous (both Museum Island and Alexanderplatz are busy areas), but I wanted to warn other travellers of this and be aware of your belongings.

Please don't be put off going to Berlin. Apart from this incident, I felt safe exploring the city on my own.

Similar happened in Paris many years ago. Man grabbed hold of my youngest daughters hand to tie a bracelet on. I had heard of this as they ask for a lot of money in exchange. My French was quite good and he was shocked when I grabbed her hand back. Easy pickings or so he thought :@

In St Louis last year, I was asked for a light. I guess he thought I was going to open my handbag, most upset when I did not as I do not smoke. Being on your own can be quite frightening, that was a one off, usually I go with several others when I am on a Just You tour.

Hi Wess, good on you for alerting people to the scam. It seems strange it was only last week when we were there. I eventually got home at 11.45 on Monday night.

Great to have met you .

Hi Margaret,

It was lovely to meet you too! Glad you managed to get home that night - hope the onward travelling wasn't too stressful. I got home around 9pm and immediately fell asleep.

It was a wonderful short break - definitely looking to go again in future! Only it's left me wanting to go on another holiday now :D

Take care,

Wess
