Hi People

I'm new to this site and Just You. On a whim have just booked Highlights of Tuscany for 12th May and Wild Borneo for 20th October 2016.

Would like to hear from fellow travellers on Tuscany trip, and would also like to hear from anyone also booked on the Borneo adventure, and would appreciate hearing from anyone with experience of Borneo about inoculations, malaria precautions, mosquitoes, anything else, etc,  - anything to do with living in that environment.

Also just wanted to say Hi. Hope this is the right place for it ....

Hi John

Welcome! I am going on the May Borneo trip and will be writing a review on my return. Hopefully the review will give you some idea of what to expect. Enjoy Highlights of Tuscany and do let us know how you got on.

Hello everyone. I too lost my beloved husband two years ago and for a long time became a bit of a hermit. Finding friends willing to go on holiday with you is difficult when they still have their partners. I've just become 70 and felt that I was now too old to venture out by myself. But then I read some of your posts and looked at the happy pictures and thought that there is still life to be enjoyed. I am eagerly looking at the selection of holidays.

Welcome Issy,

There are many people in your age group that use JY for holidays near and far, you will be fine, you will find yourself with a mix of people widows, singles, inrealationships or even married.people travel alone for many reasons.

I have travelled with JY since 2006 and have been in 11 tours all have been very good, it works really well you will see so much in a secure way.

Any questions just ask, I wish you well, good luck.

Hi Rob,

I'm going on the first departure on this new tour next month so it will be a journey into the unknown for us!  Check the reviews section in early June as we will be back by then.  Jaya has volunteered to write a detailed review on our return and no doubt I will have a few things of my own to share too!

It should be a fantastic tour, provided we all deal with the heat and humidity!

Cheers,

Bob

Looking forward to my first JY trip to Andalucia's Golden Triangle , departing Manchester June 13th. Went on a Travelsphere tour of France in 2013. That was wonderful but because most people on that were couples I sometimes felt I may be imposing my company on them so the idea of travelling with other solo travellers appeals. I have gone on several holidays alone since my wife's death so that aspect does not worry me but finding ourselves all in the same boat should be a great icebreaker, especially for shy folk like me.

Hi Rob, I've booked on the same Borneo trip, I found some good tips in the Lonely planet Borneo guidebook and also online at Borneo tourist information, however it had conflicting advice about money. One said only RM1000  can be brought in, another anything up to the equivilent of 10000 USD. Can anyone assist in this?

Thanks

Hi Robert,

Welcome to Just You!

You've chosen a fab trip, I am sure you'll truly enjoy it.

In terms of clothing, the tropical weather is hot and humid and we recommend light, comfortable cotton shirts as well as t-shirts and shorts. Light rain wear is a must as there will be some rain too.

To protect against the tropical sun we also recommend you take a sun hat and thin long-sleeved shirts and long trousers to protect you from mosquitos in the evenings.

Footwear wise we recommend comfortable hiking/walking shoes that can handle jungle streams or muddy trails and a good pair of trainers for the shorter trips. All of this should be waterproof especially for when you'll travel by boat.

Hope this answers most of your questions.

Have a fantastic holiday and let us have your feedback once you come back.

Kind regards,

Elisa

Thank you for the replies to my question about being veggie on a trip. I was looking at a Paris weekend as a starting point, I've only been to France twice on day trips so I had no idea. I'm not too fussy and can survive on basics for a weekend-and porridge is handy to pack!

I know the feeling, being vegetarian is one of the main reasons I am concerned about booking my first trip with JY.  I am considering the french river cruise and if all else fails I could have a cup-a-soup in my cabin!  Have you booked anything yet?

I took £150 worth of Ringitts and used my credit card to make purchases at a shop at the Sandakan hotel. You will not need a lot of money unless you buy lots of souvenirs. The weather is hot and humid. It can rain at any time so do take a small umbrella. I think a waterproof will be too hot to wear. Some of us bought a plastic poncho and it came in handy when it rained during one of the boat cruises. You both will have a wonderful time in Borneo. I have posted a comprehensive review under the 'review' section.

Hi Nollyc,

Welcome to Just You!

There are currently 3 people booked on the New Year in the Big Apple tour leaving on 30th Dec 2016.

They are all ladies and their age range varies from 45 to 75.

Please ask any more questions you may have, this is the right place!

Kind regards,

Elisa

Hi Nollyc,

I would recommend that you start a new thread in this 'Say hello to other single travellers' forum and then anyone who is booked on the tour and uses the community will be able to spot your message and reply. It is worth noting that sadly not all travellers use the community so you may not have an immediate response as the numbers are low at the moment. You may find as more travellers book, there is a greater chance that one of your fellow travellers will also be a community member.

Kindest regards,

Julia

Two years ago I was in the same position as many of you, having lost my husband in February 2012.  A had never travelled alone, or even for that matter lived alone.  I am in my mid-70's.  I found JY and other singles holiday companies through an internet search and booked my first holiday.

I was so scared a few days before departure that I almost asked my doctor to sign me off sick so that I did not have to go and claim on the insurance!  Sense prevailed because I really knew that she wouldn't do it.

You are really "on your own" until you get to the departure airport.  Unless of course you have someone to travel with you, or take you to the airport.  From there on you will have as much or as little company as you wish.

Fellow travellers are there for the same reason you are - it is somewhere they want to visit.  Whether it is for the sights, architecture, history, food, culture, you have that in common at check-in.

I am so glad that I didn't call off that first holiday to France which was in May,  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  The age range, which was from about mid 30's to 80 really didn't matter, in fact I booked another for September to Calabria and thoroughly enjoyed that as well.

I have two holidays booked this year - one of them with JY.

In my limited experience tour managers have been fantastic.  The second hotel was far and away better than the first, but the first was very, very good.

Organisation from departure airport - resort(s) - return airport is smooth.  Everything is done for you.

All you have to do is choose - read any reviews on the forum that you can find - book - pay - turn up - ENJOY!!

If anyone wants to contact me "off forum" JY have my email address.

Happy travelling.

Sylvia

Thank you for this reassurance.  I am somewhat anxious about travelling alone, but I am sure it will be fine.  I have received some information from JY but wondered if they send out further information on where to meet at the airport etc?
