Two years ago I was in the same position as many of you, having lost my husband in February 2012.  A had never travelled alone, or even for that matter lived alone.  I am in my mid-70's.  I found JY and other singles holiday companies through an internet search and booked my first holiday.

I was so scared a few days before departure that I almost asked my doctor to sign me off sick so that I did not have to go and claim on the insurance!  Sense prevailed because I really knew that she wouldn't do it.

You are really "on your own" until you get to the departure airport.  Unless of course you have someone to travel with you, or take you to the airport.  From there on you will have as much or as little company as you wish.

Fellow travellers are there for the same reason you are - it is somewhere they want to visit.  Whether it is for the sights, architecture, history, food, culture, you have that in common at check-in.

I am so glad that I didn't call off that first holiday to France which was in May,  I thoroughly enjoyed it.  The age range, which was from about mid 30's to 80 really didn't matter, in fact I booked another for September to Calabria and thoroughly enjoyed that as well.

I have two holidays booked this year - one of them with JY.

In my limited experience tour managers have been fantastic.  The second hotel was far and away better than the first, but the first was very, very good.

Organisation from departure airport - resort(s) - return airport is smooth.  Everything is done for you.

All you have to do is choose - read any reviews on the forum that you can find - book - pay - turn up - ENJOY!!

If anyone wants to contact me "off forum" JY have my email address.

Happy travelling.

Hello Sylvia

I would love to contact you "off forum" if possible.  Looking to take first solo holiday after being widowed. How do I get your email address? My main fear is getting from my home address to the airport on my own. I live in South Wales. Regards Janice

Hi you'd be better putting this post under a new thread with the name of the tour and date in the title - people will be more likely to see it that way. Also as it's a long way off you might be better leaving it until 4 - 6 months before you travel, as fellow travellers are more likely to be looking at the forum in the run up to the tour.  And, of course, only a minority of JY customers use the forum!  I hope you have a fantastic tour, I'm thinking about doing it in 2020!!

All the best,

Bob

I have just booked my first JY holiday!! The first time ever I will have been away by myself. I booked it over the phone and was very reassured by Marian.

Also this is the first time I have ever used a forum so I'm on a bit of a roll!!

Thank you Sylvia for your posting it has really helped me feel less nervous.

Best wishes

Jessy

Hi Mary and Jessie,

I am glad to have settled your nerves a little bit.  The one thing I did not mention was the serious possibility of getting bitten - by the travel bug. I know from experience because I am about to leave for holiday number 11, and I am ot the only one to have been bitten.

Enjoy your holidays, and when you get back tell the forum about it on the reviews and returning from my first trip.

What an inspiring story. I am just finding my way around this forum.

(A real technophobic) so pleased I found your story. I am booked to go on the Spirit of India trip 12/2/28 and feel a lot more reassured after reading your post. Any advice or tips would be welcome. Marjie

🙂 Hi everyone, I am 61, and have never been abroad apart from Tenerife.  I do have an illness that affects my breathing in that I cannot walk that far so a walking holiday is no good to me?  I do not really wish to go abroad at the moment but like the look of the Oxford xmas holiday.  I dont have a lot of money so again I need to be sensible.  My question is - do you have to do a lot of walking or can you do as you wish ?  I dont mind some but not really a walker never have been.

Hi, New here! ?☺️

I’m a Brit living alone in Norway...my kids have all fled the nest and I’m toying with so many ideas of what I would like to do. It’s really strange as I’m not used to that question after being mum and a partner ( we’ve recently split) for so long.

Quick question... how would I go about meeting up with a JY trip from here?

( sorry rushed post...battery running out on tablet)
