Hello Anna

I am going on the Vietnam trip on 4/9/13., which is different to your trip. However I bought my Malarone tablets yesterday from Tesco's. They are the cheapest that I could find. It is definitely worth shopping around.

Good luck, hope you enjoy your holiday. I am starting the big countdown. 9 more working days.

Hi I was on this tour in Feb and brought Malarone with me which I had left over from a previous tour (not needed on the Spirit of India tour). I checked with our tour manager and she said they were not necessary so I didn't take them. If you look at any of the malaria maps they vary quite a bit but one of them showed the area between Can Tho and Phnom Penh as being a risk area. I decided it wasn't worth it taking them for just that stretch, so I put extra DEET on that day and I was fine and didn't see a single mossie! I saw mossies in Hoi An and Siem Reap (and got bitten in Hoi An) but they are not risk areas. So I would say they are not needed, but if you're unsure check with your doctor/practice nurse.

All the best,

Bob

Hi,

If you are going to buy malaria tablets from Tesco, check first that the active ingredient is the same strength. I don't know what it is, but your doctor's surgery, or google, ought to be able to tell you.

That goes for any "cheap alternative" medication.

Thanks for the advice on Tesco's.

Bob

Thanks for the advice. I did see a nurse who recommended that I take malaria tablets and gave me a private prescription. Think I was a bit gobsmacked at the price Boots wanted for the tablets - £77

Hi Anna

I bought Malarone via the internet for my trip to Zambia and Botswana. The internet companies work out cheaper than the high street chemists. I used Travelpharm, which other JY travellers had recommended - single tablet costing £2.25. Chemist Direct is another company I've heard of.

I am not booked on this trip but on another where I need Malaria tablets. My GP gave me a cheaper option and one costing about £80. My thinking is that when spending a couple of thousand pounds on a trip I don't want to waste it because I am saving £40 on a subscription.

The annoying thing is, I can see the GSK building from home but my local pharmacy doesn't want to get the stuff inn. 😞

Hi Anna,

I did this trip, along with Bob, in February this year. We did NOT need malaria tablets (and my practice nurse is very precise - I go and see her armed with a map of the exact route we are taking). For many years I have got my tablets (malarone) from the website www.travelpharm.co.uk - I have just checked and they are £2.25 each - this is for the future for you! You send them the prescription from the doctor and they send you the pills.

Have a fantastic time in Vietnam and Cambodia - we did!

Cheers,

Hils
