So I went to the doctors today to get Malaria tablets expecting to pay £1-2 a tablet, the doctor told me he will give me an NHS prescription for them as it's his duty to keep me healthy, costing £8.40. buying private ones are expensive and could lead to people not purchasing them and then costing the NHS money to care for them

So if you go to the doctors for Malaria tablets ask for an NHS prescription as it's in their interest to keep you healthy, he told me to tell fellow travellers this'll information. Hope this helps

Hi Jools

Think you will find that each General Practice control their own medication budgets and many will consider malaria tablets should be prescribed on a private prescription. This is the case in my practice and I will probably follow Hils advice.

My GP practice nurse, after our consultation and my jabs for Borneo, suggested it would be cheapest for me to go to the local Tesco pharmacy for the Malarone. I did, and after filling in a simple form got the Malarone at an amazing price!! No prescription needed.

Some pharmacies are licenced to sell malaria tablets wthout  a prescription. A malerone generic is now available at less than half the cost of the branded one

Hi

I went to my GP to ask about Maleria tablets, he told me he could write a prescription but there would be a prescription charge as well as the cost of the tablets, he also told me if I went to the pharmacy at one of the big supermarkets they would be able to provide the tablets at only the tablet cost (no prescription cost).

I then spoke to the pharmacist at sainsbury's who said they could also be ordered through Lloyds Pharmany online doctor - so I tried this route.......there were three options of tablets (exactly the ones the Doctor had suggested), after answering a few questions, I could submit the order. The following day I received a response stating my request had been assessed and approved and the tablets have been dispatched.

Seems like a quick and simple way to get the tablets, without waiting paying for prescriptions.

Hope this is of some help.

I spoke to the travel nurse at my GPs and as she couldn't do me a prescription, she suggested going to a pharmacy.

I went to Boots who were fantastic, we did a survey which took about 5 minutes and they said although where I'm going is low risk (Borneo), I could have them if I wanted them. So I bought them and 20 Malarone tablets cost me £42.20. The whole process took less than 10 minutes 🙂
