Hello Dawn.

I am also going on The Magic Of Kenya in June.I am a keen photographer and thought this would be a good starter for Africa.I will be leaving a husband and two teen Daughters behind as they are not interested in travel.I did look at other travel companies for eg Hayes and Jarvis, but their single supplement for a similar holiday was £799.Iam looking forward to this trip, although a little nervous.JEB

Hi, JEB,great to know someone else is going on this trip. Im also quite keen on getting some good photos but not sure what camera to take as the ideal one does take up a fair bit of luggage space. what are you taking. Im only leaving my 2 youngest kids at home with their gran as this is a trip ive always wanted. I am 43 and will be travelling from Devon. Dawn

Hello Dawn.

Thankyou for your reply.Being a keen photographer i hope to take as much kit as hand luggage weight permits 10kg i believe is max.Although saying that you are retricted on the size of bag 56cm x 36cm x 20cm. I use a Canon slr camera and a variety of lenses. I belong to a website called Ephotozine, my portfolio of photos can be found under jeanE. I come from Dorset and will be getting a National Express coach from Poole to Heathrow. Regards JEB.

Hi JEB,Im hoping my parents are going to give me a lift up to heathrow. Never travelled from heathrow on my own before so a bit nervous about that bit. I usually take photos with my trusty sony cybershot. takes some great shots and prob the one i'll take. I have just bought a sony slr with a couple lenses but am still a bit of a novice so just point and shoot. works for me. keep meaning to get myself on a course but kids and work dont give alot of time. maybe i can get some tips from you. I am also going on the trip, and just bought a little cam corder to take moving pictures.

I have not used one before and Jean sounds like someone who know her way around camera equipment. She may end up being the film director. If all else fails I will use my digital camera as I am familiar with that.! :-)

Getting around Heathrow is easier than you think. I had a change over there last year from terminal one to five. It is very well sign posted and if the staff see you looking perplexed they will come over and offer you their help, so no need to feel worried. If I can do it anyone can.

Hello Dawn

This is my second time with just you, and the second only time holidaying on my owm.

I felt like you last year, but, the people I was on holiday with were all old hands at this holidaying alone business, and made me feel wellcome.

Hi Dawn

Well three is better than one. At least we will have the run of the place to our selves and no need to share now. No tossing coin for first shower !! :-)

I'm still trying to sort out my best way to heathrow from Lancashire.

The packing two bags thing is causing a problem, as all cheap flights I can find from Manchester have one bag allowance for hold.

I am considering puting soft safari bag - ready packed, into a bigger suitcase , then will only have one bag to check in.

I can soon take it out of the case once we arrive in Mombassa.

It's that or take big soft bag with two weeks clothes on safari. !

Think I will relax and start looking forward to the trip once I have got my head round the bags. !!!

Will appreciate the lounge after setting off in the morning to meet the night flight!

Hi Sandra,

I am myself putting a soft sided bag , ready packed for safari, inside my bigger case. I have read comments on this site that we can take it out at the other end as the beach case stays at the airport and gets taken to our hotel ready for when we arrive. my problem is what to take on safari !!. had all my jabs now and sorting my script for malaria tablets tomorrow aswell as ordering money ( again the problem of how much to take in which currency). If we get a wet day I might get round to packing 🙂. got to use this lovely weather to get used to the heat.

Good luck with the pre hol travelling, at least we will have plenty of time on the plane to relax. ( absolutely hate flying 😞 ).

Hi there to all!!

I'm a late comer to this trip as I was originally going to Namibia but it was cancelled.

Interesting reading about the bag situation - were you given details from Just You about this and what to pack as I have not received anything as yet!

Hi Dawn and Jean

I read somewhere that African shillings could only be bought in Africa. Checked on Saturday with a travel agent in Chorley - where I live, and this is wrong. You can order them over here.

I also read that american dollar travellers cheques are best, as you get the best rate, so I will be checking that out too !.

Will let you know.

Dawn

Glad you doing same as me about the bags, I'm not as daft as I thought. !!!

Saving up for the malaria tabs. 🙂 been quoted £72.00 for 24.

We will all have to drink plenty tonic water, spiced up with a voka or a gin !!! 🙂

Hi Dawn and Jean

Been reading through the mails entitiled Magic of Kenya Oct 09.

It looks like a mixture of shillings sterling and dollar travellers cheques are the best way to go.

I would take enough to cover all non paid for excurions, just in case you fancy them all; and for meals out etc when in the beach resort. Not forgetting shopping !!!! postcards etc.

Might need a third suitcase for all the money options. !!

:-)

Hi Jean, been to bank and ordered my money today. I am taking kenyan shilling and us dollars in cash, have read on here that some had us dollars in travellers cheques but ended up changing them to ken shilling. have also read that there is a bank close by to sort money aswell. Just seem to have so much to sort out before I go anywhere, but getting excited now.

Hello Moyra.

I think we may get luggage allowance details when our tickets etc arrive in about two weeks time. I did go on the airlines website and cabin baggage can weigh up to 10kgs, and must fit in the overhead storage.

Regards Jean.

hello Moyra

Wellcome to the gang, (now 4) , as Dawn says.

Like Jean I had a quick look at Kenyan Airways site, and found that you can take 10kg of hand luggage.

My friend saYS to take my walking boots for the safari !

I was hoping to get away with a trainer type shoe. My walking boots make my feet very warm, even though they say they keep your feet cool, in summer and warm in winter !!!!!

At this rate I am going to need 10 bags hard or soft and 100 kgs of luggage allowance, and thats just for shoes !! 🙂 🙂 🙂
