Hi Sue

I can agree with Martin, (Hi Martin) this trip was Brilliant.

This is the first time I've managed to get on the forum since coming back so catching up.

Both before and in the jungle were very casual, there is really no need to dress up. A few of the group did dress up a bit more for some of the evening's when in hotels but it was still very hot and humid into the evening's so I suggest comfort over anything else.

I loved his tour from start to finish (I did Singapore as well) but the highlight most definitely is the time spent in the jungle....... cruising down the river wildlife spotting. Absolutely amazing and the chance to see Orangutans in the wild.

There's probably not really much other advise to give.......there are a couple of long drives, with enough stops on the way, aircon on the coach helps alot and views to pass the time. Make sure you go and explore a bit when in Kota Kinabalu.........the fish market/street food area is worth a wander around , if for nothing else but to see the array of things available, a popular place for the locals.

This was only my second JY trip but was definitely a trip of a lifetime.

If there's anything else you want to know, I'll do my best to answer.

Hi Paula, I am going on the November Wild Borneo trip and wondered if you would advise on suitable clothing for days and evenings out. I have seen a few different posts re shorts, sleeveless tops, suitable footwear etc. and covering up (long sleeves and trousers) to prevent mossi bites during the day as well as the evening. Any clarity you can offer would be much appreciated. Thanks Joyce

Hi Joyce.

I had the same dilemma before going and took far too much in the end.

I pretty much wore Shorts and vest tops during the days (both in the town's and jungle), it's was hot and humid, so I went for what would be cool and comfortable. As long as you cover yourself we with deet, you shouldn't have too much of a issue with mossies. They got me a couple of times but only when I had missed areas or hadn't re-applied enough. (I found boots deet wipes easy to use and apply while out and about) Evening were much the same, staying cool. There is no real need to get dressed up at all, I went for mainly linen trousers or cropped trousers with sleevless/vest tops. Shoes - I pretty much lived in flip flops or walking candles, even getting on and off the boats that was fine. (again make sure you deet your feet!) Make sure you do have a pair of closed toes shoes though - needed when you go tree planting as it can be quite muddy. I took my walking boots and they never came out of my bag.

I hope that's of some help and hope you have a fantastic time. I certainly did.

Hi Paula,

A great help! Thank you so much.  I am normally happy in shorts and tops but got the impression that I needed to cover up more, so glad I asked. I have got loads of deet and will get the wipes, great idea. I am looking forward to the trip and glad you had a great time. All the best. Joyce

Hi all

I've just got back from Borneo and had the most wonderful time. All my expectations were met, Which I consider to be very lucky and I am so glad I went there.

Re clothing: I bought some quick dry trousers which converted into shorts, they are the ones impregnated with some kind of mosquito repellant. They were super comfortable and when we got absolutely drenched in the boats, they dried out really quickly. I bought them online from  a well known outdoor clothing shop. Similarly I bought quick dry t shirts.

Have a wonderful trip. I wish I was still there

Hi Sue, thanks for info. Can I ask you how it went with the luggage? JY "recommend" taking a smaller bag for stays at the lodges but I have read on the forum that this is optional and you can take your case if you want to. How did this work on your trip please? Does your luggage / holdall or whatever have to be waterproof? Thanks Joyce

Hi Joyce. I had gone prepared with a rucksack for the stay at the lodges but as some of the group said that they weren’t informed of this, and were therefore unprepared, we all had to take our suitcases. It worked out ok. My suitcase is hardshell but many had fabric cases which weren’t waterproof and it wasn’t a problem.

The weather was always warm whether wet or dry except one cold night at Pines resort.

Good idea to spray with Deet as this kept mossies off me. Quick dry clothes invaluable for day wear. Take a cheap poncho with hood for sudden downpours esp when on the river as there’s absolutely no shelter.

I’m very envious of you as I loved this holiday.

Enjoy

Sue

I did this trip last year with Kim as tour manager, there are a few long drives before you get to the lodges, but well worth it. If you are not doing the Singapore add on, the airport do run some free trips so if like me you have a long lay over in Singapore on the way back it is well worth doing, so although Kim did not recomend doing this, we all got back safely in plenty of time. From memory the lodges do not have many power points, so if like me you have a number of things to charge each day I'd suggest a 4 socket extension lead so that you can get your camera, phone etc all charged up
