Apologies for the delay, I just needed to look into this.

Chile – The currency is the Chilean Peso and USD aren’t usually accepted. So its best to either change £ to Chilean Peso in the UK (it may need to be ordered in advance) or if you want to change currency in Chile then take USD to exchange (I’d recommend changing a small amount of £ to Chilean peso in the UK before you go).

Argentina – The currency is the Argentinian Peso. USD are sometimes accepted albeit in very touristy areas. It isn’t currently possible to buy Argentine pesos outside Argentina so I would recommend taking USD to change once you get there as other currencies can be difficult to exchange.

Brazil – The currency is the Brazilian Real and this can be exchanged in the UK so I’d suggest changing some in the UK before going (again it needs to be ordered in advance) otherwise you can exchange money there and most exchanges should accept £’s.

Hi. I recently left a message but guess you were too busy to reply.I am on the trip to Chile , Argentina and Brazil later in the year. What is your advice on currency. Some lovely friends have suggested I could just take US dollars with me and change there.Some have suggested I take Brazilian and Chilean currency with me. Any advice.Also what currency can I use if I want to pay for any of the options when I am there. Do I need any jabs before I depart. Finally do you know the TM and how many folk are booked on the trip, depart November 5th.Thank you. Russell Kerfoot.

I did this trip 5 years ago and when we arrived in Mendoza the TM spoke to the hotel reception and they arranged for a "gentleman" to come and change our US dollars into Argentine currency at a much better rate than the official one. I can't remember the exact figure but I think the official rate was 8 to the dollar and we got 13 or 14.

He had to go and get some more Argentine money during his visit and wasn't gone long - I suspect the adjoining casino was exchanging its takings in local cash for hard currency.

I did this tour earlier this year.  I took Chilean and Brazilian currency and some US dollars.  I also took a currency card, loaded with pounds sterling.  Although it was loaded with sterling, any purchase is paid for in the local currency.  Apart from a lunch stop en route to Mendoza, I used the card throughout Argentina.   I used Chilean currency to pay for that lunch.  I withdrew some Argentinian currency from an ATM in Mendoza (using the currency card) but there was a small charge for this service.  I did not touch my US Dollars.  I also used the currency card to pay for some of the optional excursions (although I booked most of them before departure).  

Some members of the group managed to buy Argentinian pesos from Marks and Spencer.

I had the following vaccinations before the tour - yellow fever, a tetanus booster and typhoid.

I did this tour last November Russell. I took Chilean pesos with me ( about £75 worth ) USD and those perfect exchange rate debit / credit cards. At the border between Chile / Argentina  Chilean pesos were accepted (coffee and lunch stops) . We exchanged currency in Mendoza.

There were cambios in Mendoza / ATMs for currency exchange . In BA there was an atm immediately opposite the hotel . The shopping mall adjacent to the hotel had exchange bureaus but would would change/ take nothing less than a 50 US dollar note. We changed Argentina’s currency for Brazilian immediately after crossing border. Easy to change  / obtain money in Rio . Everywhere accepted cards .
