Hi Julia,

I am travelling to South Africa at the end of this month and the JY holiday details state that a maximum of 5000 ZAR (about (£290.00) can be bought into SA by tourists. Having looked on the internet there seems to be a range of limits depending on where you look including the officials SA sites but the consensus seems to be 25,000 maximum. Do you know the official figure thanks,

Keith

Hi Keith, our agent in South Africa tells us that the limit is R5000 so that is what we are advising to customers.

Thanks,

Tim

According to our own government's web site the amount is 10,000 rand so now I'm really confused. South Africa's government site is saying it's even higher. £290 seems an awfully small amount to be able to take in.

Thanks for looking Tim, and you can only advise what the agent says.

You are right Jilly, £290 is not much to take in and I don't particularly want to be visiting a cash machine early on. For example the post office will not let you order online anything less than £400 and states you must declare if you bring in more than 10,000 ZAR

Travelex say 25,000 ZAR

I guess we have to take a chance, I will probably take £500 worth of ZAR, plus dollars for Zambia and Sterling for the trips if I want to book any more.

Anyway its only just over a week and looking forward to meeting up with everyone

Hi when I did this tour in 2011, I brought the maximum recommended 5000R and US $ for Zambia; at no time were we asked about how much currency were we carrying. Most of us used an ATM at some stage or another, but for security reasons make sure you do not go alone - there are a lot of ATM scams running and you don't want to get caught up in one! Hope you have a great holiday,

Bob

I did this trip a couple of years ago. I took the maximum amount of cash and then put extra on a Cash Card which I withdrew from an ATM on the first day. There have been previous threads discussing Cash Cards which are preloaded and not connected to a bank account so safer to travel with than credit cards.
