Hello. I have booked the Spirit of India trip departing October 6th 2014 - does anyone know if we need to take malaria tablets please? I know most destinations are in low risk areas but Rathembore and Vanansi seem to be unknown to the chemists I have asked. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Angie fs

We are unable to advise on whether or not you should take Malaria tablets, please speak to your GP or practice nurse will be able to offer guidance on this based on the latest travel advice and your medical history.

You are travelling to a region where mosquitoes are present and would advise that you purchase high performance mosquito repellent to use regularly during your holiday (subject to consultation with a qualified pharmacist). We would also suggest a 'plug in' mosquito repellent device. The National Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention recommends using DEET based repellents with a concentration of over 20% as these give a longer duration of protection than other types currently available.

Some people on the community have mentioned that they don't get on very well with DEET, so it is worth testing this product before you travel just in case you need to find an alternative repellent.

Kindest regards,

Julia

Hi Angie,

I brought Malarone on this tour as my very cautious doctor thought it might be needed - it wasn't! The tour manager who has done many India tour advised me there was no need and I'm glad I didn't as Malarone can upset your stomach and I had a one day experience of "Jaipur Belly" so didn't want to take anything else that might upset it! A few on our tour did take Malarone anyhow but it really wasn't needed. I don't think I saw a single mosquito the whole tour! I did use DEET as a precaution though. I've always used the spray which can take the lining off your lungs! Some people use the roll-on version but I wouldn't say it's as effective as it would be harder to spread. Anyhow, hope you have a great trip, it's a fantastic busy tour with lots of early starts and a few long days travelling but it's all worth it!

Best wishes,

BOb
