Hi Olly,

Sorry - a few questions....

Do we have the name of our tour manager yet please?

Do you know how many of us are going on this date yet?

Could you tell me what adaptors I will need for my electrical stuff (camera, mobile phone charger etc.) please.

I saw you told someone to take their walking boots - will I need to do so as I am not doing the Amazon add-on?

I have already had my jabs but think I may need insect repellent but I am not sure.

I see there are 2 optional excursions but these cannot be paid in advance. I know how much these cost in Sterling but have no idea how much cash I should take - Is Peru expensive? What is best - to get a small amount of currency before I go & take Sterling (as for China) or take more Peruvian currency? I will take my debit & credit cards of course.

I am really looking forward to this trip. Sorry so many questions

Best wishes,

Lesley

Hi Lesley

Your tour manager is Brian Croft and so far 13 have booked.

For adapters, have a look at this website - useful for future trips as it has info on every country in the world:

http://electricaloutlet.org/

It would be handy to have hiking boots but you probably can manage without them. Parts of Machu Picchu have some big steps and as you are in the Andes the gradients can be a little steep but if that doesn't sound like a problem then by all means just take some decent trainers.

I don't remember there being that many insects when I visited - certainly not at higher altitude - but it might be worth having a spray handy in Lima.

Peru is an extremely cheap country so you won't need a lot of cash. You will need money for one or two meals each day but I doubt this will cost much. I would allow about £30 a day (you can always withdraw more). If you can't get some Peruvian sol before you go you will be able to get it at the airport or the banks in Lima. I managed to use my debit card in cashpoints there almost 10 years ago, so I'm sure that will be easy now.

Not long to go now!

Kind regards

Olly, your editor

I went to Peru in 2009 and took sterling and US dollars and got local currency in Lima. Most places were very happy to take dollars and in fact many items were priced in sol and dollars.

Hi Peter,

Thanks I was still unsure whether to take Sterling or dollars. If I took some dollars, I could always use them up later in the year when I do Route 66, I suppose. May take both then.

I checked the website Olly suggested for the electrical adaptors but there were 3 different ones listed. Could you remember which ones were needed please?

Best wishes,

Hi Lesley

As far as I can remember it was the top one of those shown, with two round prongs.

Hi Lesley

Yes Machu Picchu is one of the reasons for booking! Last year I went to China and know you have done this JY trip too, I just loved the wall as I had always wanted to see it and never dreamt I would. That's made me even more adventurous!!

Have a brilliant time!

Hi Lynden,

Someone after my own heart - likes to travel - big style!

Yes I did China last March - and it was great! That train journey was so much fun but I have to admit, the Great Wall is awesome.

So Peru this March. This holidaying lark is so addictive....

As you may be aware, I am also doing Route 66 this year - so that might be one for you to think about in the future. I can also recommend Moscow & St.Petersburg (for something a bit different).

But you know, there is so much choice (and only so much time and money!) - but it's great to have a 'wish list'......

Hi Lesley

I agree that all this travel is addictive . . . I have already booked to go to Marrakesh in May with a couple of ladies I met on a JY trip a couple of years ago.

I do fancy an American trip and Route 66 is an option, I really would like to see New Orleans and experience the music too.

I am debating an offer to go with another friend to Sweden in March to hopefully see the Northern Lights! (Money!!!!). I'm also worried about having the right clothes and not freezing to death!!

Take care

Hi Olly,

Only just over 4 weeks to go now and it looks like this trip is full. Can you please tell me how many people are in our happy band?

Thanks.

Hi Lesley, it's just over 4 weeks now until I go to Peru!! How did you enjoy the trip? I hope that it was great for you. I would be grateful if you have any personal tips about clothes, footwear or anything else!

Thanks, Lynden

Hi Linden

I expect you can't wait for your trip now and I know you will enjoy yourself.

I went in March as you know, but even so it was hotter than I expected. Make sure you take comfy clothes (you will get details of what you might need in your documents pack). Obviously comfy shoes are also a must as there is quite a lot of walking. We went out a couple of times at night so got chance to dress up but that is entirely up to you.

The hotels in Cusco and Puno have oxygen and I suggest you use it - also you can buy a can to take with you if you want. We nearly all experienced altitude sickness in some shape or form - even our tour manager. Mine was in the form of headaches but 10 mins of oxygen helped clear this. Also there is coca tea in all the hotels and again even if you are not a tea drinker like me, you will find it pleasant and it really helps. They suggested we avoided alcohol and caffeine at altitude and again that is helpful. Altitude sickness has nothing to do with fitness it's just one of those things !

Have a wonderful time - it is certainly something different and something you will always remember.

HI Lesley

I am glad that you enjoyed your trip and thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I will take advantage of the oxygen and the coca (not a tea or coffee drinker either) if it helps deal with any possible symptoms.

Just one other query, are closed in shoes required for Machu Pichu? I hav trekking sandals that I usually like to wear on holiday. I wore them climbing on the great wall. Happy to wear trainers if necessary though.

Best wishes

Lynden

Hi Lesley, some other questions have been raised about this trip on another thread and I'm just wondering was it the usual JY set up for lunch and dinner - either the TM suggested a place to go for a meal (lunch) and everyone ate in the hotel for dinner? It's just that in the blurb Ben put up about this hol it said there are markets where people can shop for picnics and dinner and this really doesn't appeal to me! I'm hoping to do this hol in a year or two, so just inquiring at this stage but your input would be invaluable. Also did you find the food very spicy or unpalatable? I don't like the sound of whole guinea pig for dinner!!

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Bob,

The food in Peru is good - I loved the alpaca but only one of our group tried the guinea pig & he was not that impressed. I don't eat spicy food so it was just right for me. We went to restaurants in Lima, Cusco & Puno but the food in the hotels is good too. I am sure you will be fine. We didn't go to buy picnic food whilst I was there - it's not my sort of thing anyway. Hope this helps.

I can recommend this holiday - if you are like me & have always wanted to go to Machu Picchu you will really enjoy it.

Best wishes,

Lesley
