Hi Calm Air Pal,

Some of us pensioners (!) only got 4 weeks holiday a year in the 40 years I worked!! I have also visited many countries many times. Maybe I should start a thread on how many countries people have lived in?!!

Cheers,

Hils

Just seen this thread - what a great way to spend part of a lunchtime.  Despite being a relative newbie in JY terms I have managed to clock up 16 which will be 18 in July (hopefully).

I definitely think an emergency landing at Guantanamo Bay should count... but not sure if Wales & Scotland should..... if they do, can I count the the Isle of Wight lol

SarahS - you seem to be the winner so far with 79.... But I think some of the other JustYou'ers are going to be catching you up soon...

Thank you everyone for in this bit of fun... 🙂

I think Wales and Scotland should count as they are countries with their own governments after all.

Hi Dave,

After discussing this topic with some others on a couple of trips, we decided that England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland should definitely be counted as separate countries - I doubt anyone from any of them would wish to be merely categorised as coming from a "region" of the UK!  But sorry Kerry, the Isle of Wight doesn't count!  A TM on our Vietnam tour nearly had a canary when she overheard us discussing which countries could be included and someone asked about the Isle of Man!

Cheers,

Bob

I am really disappointed about the IOW and IOM come to think of it... but with England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland included - I could push my numbers up by say 3 🙂

I agree with Bob and SarahS that for most of us the idea of traveling is to see the world.. to experience the sights, the sounds and cultures.... but a little healthy competition between friends never hurts and from now on I'm only booking multiple destination holidays so I can catch up with some of you.

Just checked my Been app and surprised I have chalked up 35 countries; they do list the Isle of Man a a seperate country

I believe England (!) should count as a country. It has it's own national football team. Therefore Scotland and Wales are countries too  :shy:  And Northern Ireland.

That's my theory!

Angie

PS all this brings back memories of myself and my brother staying with my grand parents and the game we played was who could name all the 50 states of America from memory the quickest. I can still name them to this day many years later.

Re the Isle of Wight then I live there!

Notwithstanding that there are many connections, bridges & tunnels excepted, to the mainland (a.k.a England or North Island) then there is a large lobby here that contends we are our own separate entity!

This somewhat reminds me that whilst changing planes one time in Cincinnatti and checking out fridge magnets (which I collect) I learned that the airport was actually in Kentucky & not in Ohio where the city was. The young lady on the stall assured me however that I could purchase magnets for both Ohio & Kentucky on a technicality - and whilst I remain unsure what that technicality is I do have both magnets.

On a similar uncertain technicality then I too would contend, if only for fridge magnet purposes, that the IoW is a separate country.  😉

Further to my earlier post then it occurs that we could let JY arbitrate by introducing an Isle of Wight break. We could then st back and see if this is included in the UK, European or worldwide brochure....  😉 😉 😉

Don't forget Jersey and Guernsey!

IOM and Gibraltar would count as seperate counties. Don't forget there are a few islands scattered around the world that form part or are dependent on another larger nation, and you can't really count them as France, USA or UK (Guadeloupe, Aruba, Puerto Rico, Cayman Islands, BVI, Bermuda, Tahiti, Cook Islands, Easter Island, Greenland, Falklands etc) and of course there is Antarctica and what about Hong Kong?

Being from Jersey, visiting the UK countries, Guernsey and Alderney tend to be for week long holidays, so therefore count towards my total. (same goes for Madeira)

That brings my total to a paltry 15.

But a number of them I have visited multiple times, only to different regions, and will be returning to two of them for my second trip to Greece (Corinth Coast) next month (but the first time was a morning port call in Athens,) and to Sicily in September the 5th part of Italy i have been to. China would probably be my 16th destination, would Hong Kong count as number 17?

Gosh how could I forget Australia and Hong Kong which takes me to 18 plus does Singapore count as I spent many hours in the airport plus an unplanned stay in Kuala Lumpur must count.  We did leave the airport for a brief stop in a hotel so that's now 19. And if we are counting Wales & Scotland (sorry Hils) then I am up to 21.

Hello Ian,

On your comment about fridge magnets for the American States, my late husband Paul collected them as he worked out there for 3 months every year. Whilst working in Texas, he purposely went into Louisiana just to claim it

I too have collected magnets whilst there and in 2008 collected Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Went over the bridge from Memphis to Arkansas so had to buy that one then Hurricane Ike put paid to Texas as it destroyed Houston and the Airport. To this day, I have still not been to Texas but I did have to buy Alabama as we went back through the State to Atlanta.

Hi Jan,

Magnets started quite innocently as the then fridge-freezer got a minor dent in a house move so I bought one to hide this. Since then........there is a fridge freezer there somewhere... LOL

I had a pal who relocated to Texas, more specifically Dallas. which I have been to several times over the years. I would consider the "Big Texan Adventure" had I not already been to most places independently...

The magnets are a bit of a taking point & an inexpensive souvenir that does not take up (too) much room in the case.
