This morning at a team building workshop, we were asked how many countries there are in the world today, could we name them and how many of those countries have we visited...  It was a very lively and interesting discussion, with most people discovering they had visited more countries than they initially thought.

The final conclusion was that there are 195 Countries (or 197 if you include Taiwan and the Vatican City) and that for the most part even as a group, we have not even been a quarter of the way round the world yet.

As for me, I discovered I have only visited 27 of the 197 countries.  So I thought it might be interesting to see how many counties everyone else has visited...

Nowhere near as many of you. 🙂  15, (it's great that the Balkans count as separate countries now).  🙂

Hi Kerry, this question has arisen on a number of tours I've been on over the last few years and a couple of us have had a lot of fun counting them up!  I'm currently on 59 and should hit the big 60 in Slovakia in May on the Danube Wine trip - another reason to celebrate while we're there!!  I would class myself as reasonably well travelled at this stage, as I've met a number of people who have seen a lot more of the world - on the Balkan tour I did with Travelsphere a couple of years ago, there were a number of people who reckoned they'd visited around 100 countries!  They'd boosted their numbers by doing a few cruises, which obviously can visit many destinations in a short space of time.  On Facebook, I follow Johnny Ward, whose page is called OneStep4Ward and he has just finished visiting every country in the world (197!) at the age of 33!!

All the best,

Bob

Kezzer good question...

I can be a bit blond at times! I get countries towns city's all mixed up..it might help if I had all the countries listed..so have had a quick look on google

So don't take my total as gospel 21 .... I have been in the great position I have visited all my dream destinations..

To date 53 but 2 more to add in June, Latvia & Lithuania. As Bob says cruising helps boost numbers quickly.

This has given me something to add up over the weekend, does places like Luxembourg count on route to Austria, i did get out when we stopped at a service station passing through, me and a friend brought this up at the time as the girl who was going with us couldn't be botherd to get off the coach going so she made sure she did on return, i'm guessing i'll be in the fifties

Hi Kezza,

Well this is a poser!  If I can't sleep I sometimes try to list them in my head and it usually works great but I've never got to the end of the list.  So I decided to write them down this time.  I think its 49, Chile in Oct will be number 50.  I think I'll celebrate that too, Bob.  Oops! I've just realised I missed off Ireland, how could I, now its 50, 51 in Oct.

Hils, Bob and Roger - you three are amazingly well traveled and I am jealous in the nicest possible way.

The figures we were given say that the average UK person has only visited 5% of countries worldwide – that equates to visiting about 10 countries and usually these are in Europe.  That at least means that myself, Bosuncat, Cindy & Lesley are above average…yippee

The least visited countries make up nearly half of the world! Ghana is one of these countries which happens to be a place I have visited - so I should get double points for that one!!  I find this all so fascinating...

Thanks for joining in and motivating me

Kezzer

PS:  Bob, I think Johnny Ward might be the person that facilitator of the workshop was taking about.  Did he make millions by blogging about his travels?

When saw this I thought it could have been a Monday Musings question, anyway after a count up I

have been to a total of 21 countries, but I have visited most of those several times as I like to get to know

the feel and the culture of a country, one visit just doesn't do it.

Dave.

Hello Everyone,

What a great question, worked out at 26 with another 2 including Singapore and New Zealand later on in October. I would have thought it was more but I quess when you have done France, America and Canada so many times- it does feel like more 😉

I've jist checked the Countries Been app on my mobile and it tells me I've been to 42 countries.

I've done a handful of cruises taking me to less visited countries like Ukraine and Lebanon. Brilliant for Baltic countries. Cruises are great holidays but now I prefer my land tours and getting to know a place more.

Central America looks a good tour with 6 countries.

A work in progress. 2 countries should be added this year if I'm spared    😃

I did this very exercise as a game for my family birthday party only last year, providing everyone with a printed list of countries, then asking them to tick or cross off every country they thought Uncle Michael had ever visited!

I came up with a staggering total of 257 so must’ve included umpteen that Kezzer’s team omitted for some good reason.  I see they included such obscure destinations as Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Nauru and Saint Pierre and Miquelon, to name just three.  Lots of islands I see as I look at my original list.

Anyway, more realistically, I see my own score of those visited is nothing to shout about at a mere 22.

This got me thinking too! I've been to 31 as long as the naval base in Guantanamo Bay Cuba counts which as it was US base , might not! It was an emergency stop in the middle of Hurricane Mitch so not keen to repeat that one!

I need to get some more countries under my belt and am at last going to Borneo later this year!

Thanks for the thread. It's fun hearing where people have been and well done to the guy who has been Everywhere. Wow! Where now? The moon??!

For me, its  not just the number a of countries visited, even though I'm lucky enough to have visited seventy nine: it's embracing different cultures and ways of life. I try to select tours that allow free time to just wander round, taking in the local sights and sounds.

Hi Kerry,

Yes that's right Johnny Ward has made over a million from his blogging and is now dabbling in properties!  He's based in Thailand and his blog is really interesting - you should check it out!  The good thing about Johnny and his travels is that he has usually spent up to a couple of weeks in each destination, unlike an American traveller who became the fastest to visit every country recently at the age of (I think) 27 - she only spent a couple of hours in many countries.  I'm not deliberately trying to "up" my total, merely trying to see as much of the world as possible while the opportunities are there, as we never know what will happen next...

Cheers,

Bob
