Checking my documents for my holiday to Calabria I noticed the page titled 'Travelling with Ryanair', and 

read that all passengers must now check-in and print out boarding cards for both outbound AND return flights.

So after a lot of faffing about and a couple of phone calls to JY I am all set to go.
