I'm considering the 'Silk Road to Samarkand' holiday but I note the long 8 hr drive from Khiva to Bhukara.

I'd like to know from any people who have done this tour, how comfortable they found that particular stretch? I've noticed that another tour company is now flying people between these 2 destinations as they said the roads were poor, there was no nice scenery to stop off at, and there were no places to have a comfort break - just the side of the road!

Grateful to know your views - the flight sounds preferable in some ways but there again, I wouldn't want to miss out on any interesting scenery or experiences you'd get by road...

Many thanks.

I found the 8 hour trip a real adventure and although the comfort stops were few and far between it did not seem to cause people any problems. It is several years since I did this trip but believe the road has now been upgraded. All I can say is do not let this journey put you off. It was one of the most interesting holidays I've had with JY.

Hi

This holiday is on my list and here's hoping that it will not be 'rested' by Just You as I will not be able to do it for the next couple of years unless I am able to squeeze it in with all the others I want to do. Ros, there is a good review of this holiday under the 'review' section. Reading the review made me want to do this holiday!

I agree with Roger. I was in Uz in 2012. The road by and large was not great (far from it) but you could see the efforts at that time being made to upgrade. I too found the day to be an adventure crossing the desert and wouldn't have changed a thing.

Hi Ros

I did the trip in Spring, it is a long drive through mainly desert, but we had a very nice and leisurely lunch stop. Personally I didn't find the drive was a problem, although there were places where the road was still being upgraded, I would much rather be moving than stuck at an airport for hours. The coach had air con & I had a good book 'Carpet ride to Khiva'. As Roger said, it is very interesting trip, not only the rich ancient history, but the recent events since breaking from the USSR which are currently shaping the country.

When I did this trip last September large parts of the road had been upgraded and this shortened the journey time considerably. There were also long stretches of road either under construction or newly completed but not yet open so I suspect journey times will continue to fall. We did experience some stretches of appalling road but the coach was modern and the driver skilled at steering round potholes.

We did stop every couple of hours for 'comfort' breaks- all places had limited and basic toilet facilities. it was only at the first stop, when we arrived after another coach did some of the party feel the need to go alfresco and hide behind the sand dunes.

The scenery may not be pretty but it was varied along the route and there was plenty to see or speculate about.. When things got a bit samey - either side of the lunch break, the tour guide invited questions and so we learnt about the education , healthcare and welfare systems of the country.

The trip passed quickly and is probably not such an adventure as it was when Roger did it so don't let it put you off. If there wasn't so many other places to see in the world I'd happily go back

Thank you to all for taking the time to comment, and it sounds re-assuring! I really hope to book this for this coming September 🙂
