Hi. I am hoping to book a JY holiday in 2013. I've previously been to Andalucia with JY and really enjoyed the holiday. I'd like to book somewhere exciting, different and have a special holiday. I've been looking at America (Golden West/Route 66), also China and possibly Cuba.

My problem is that I have ongoing lower back pain and sciatica. Although I am fit to walk around, I do find it very uncomfortable to sit for long periods, and I would like to book a holiday with a mixture of sightseeing and relaxation. I'm a bit worried about the holiday being too trashing for me. So not sure if my choices would be the most suitable at the moment.

Has anyone been on these trips and could give me an idea of how tiring they are. Or could you recommend a different holiday that might be more suitable? Could the Tour Reps give me any advice?

I'm 43 and other than having chronic back pain I am fit. My pain is a 'hidden' problem and would not be immediately apparent.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome

I have not been on any of the above tours, I have been on 8 JY tours near and far and what I would say is:- the 3 USA tours I have been on have been full on with some very early mornings, there can be long drives and a fair amount of walking albeit not to strenuous. Also there is the time on the plane if you get effected by sitting for to long. having listened to people while away and reading between the lines on the message boards China is a fantastic tour, but again full on. Cuba I have no knowledge on.. I do hope others on here can offer you some information as I would hate to sound negative on your question. I beleive in telling it how it is, as I would want some one to do for me if I was asking a question like this. The other thing ou could do is ring the office and chat it through with them, they might be able to she'd more light on this for you.

Good luck

Having done both the American holidays you suggest my personal preference is that the Golden West is the better of the two. I'm not saying that Route 66 isn't a good holiday but just think the Golden West the scenary and places you visit are better and offer greater variation.

That said both trips cover a lot of miles and you will spend a fair amount of time sat on a coach.

Hi Sunhol,

I sympathise with you greatly as my mother suffers terribly from this condition. Would you be able for a long haul flight as I know my mother wouldn't even be able to sit on a plane for a couple of hours? If so, I hope you find the right holiday for you. I've done the Golden West and thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a couple of long days on the coach but - and this is an important but - there were "comfort stops" every couple of hours usually for 20-30 mins so plenty of time to walk around and hopefully get enough relief. I suppose only you can judge whether this would give you enough respite to be able to face the next leg of the journey. I've also done South Africa, India and South America (with Travelsphere) and I reckon all the long haul tours involve at least a couple of long travelling days, with some shorter hops in between. Perhaps a resort based holiday would suit you better, where you could choose whichever excursions suited you most and have rest days if needed? I also did the Andalucia tour and thought it was terrific. Hope you make the right choice, as there are plenty of resort based tours to choose from as well as the long haul tours. Maybe you could choose a hol with a moderate pace (the tour advisors on the phone could help you choose) and see how you get on?

All the best,

Bob

Hi Lorraine

If long haul does not suit you, I would recommend Costs de la Luz - I went there in May this year and it is a wonderful destination. You only have half day trips apart from a full day to Seville and the coach travel is not for very long periods. You also get plenty of time to enjoy the hotel and the beach and relax.

Regards

Thanks Jaya. Costa de la Luz sounds great. I'll go and check it out in the brochure. I think this is an all inclusive one as well. It's great to hear from people who have been to all these different places. Thanks again.

From my short haul tours I can recommend in order...

1. Austrian Lakes

2. Poland and Tatra Mountains dont think this is on offer now

3. Highlights of Tuscany

If that helps you at all..

Jaya has nearly convinced me to do Costa de la Luz!

Sunhol I too have problems with lower back pain. I was diagnosed at the end of last year with an arthritic spine, and cant do as much walking on holiday as I used to do. So I sympathiese and have read this thread with interest. I wanted to say thanks for bringing the subject up!!

Thanks Bob. Hadn't really thought about the comfort stops on buses etc. I could do a long haul flight, but would spend quite a lot of it pacing around the aircraft. I'll look more into resort based holiday after reading your post Thanks
