Have just returned from my first holiday with Just You. The Hotel for this holiday was changed three times after I booked the holiday. I rang before the holiday to ask if Just You staff had visited the new Hotel (Bel Soggiorno in Maderno). I was told that no-one had inspected the hotel. This gave me a bad feeling. I went ahead with the holiday.

The Hotel is listed as 4 star. First the positive. It has a very good location beside the lake. The negatives - very old and dated accommodation. Plenty of light bulbs missing, holes in walls, things sticking out of the wall. I actually had a fairly OK room overlooking the lake and managed to sleep despite the noise from the road until late at night and early in the morning. I put up with it. I was very disappointed and the Hotel was way below standard. The swimming pool and jacuzzi on the roof was dirty and the furniture up there was cracked, dirty and very, very old. Nothing about this Hotel is 4 star. The positives - my room was kept spotlessly clean.

The worst thing about the holiday was the totally bland and tasteless food served up in the evening. We had no fresh fruit or vegetables either at breakfast or in the evening the whole time we were there. Most of us ate lunch on our days out just to compensate. I have never stayed anywhere that served worse food. An awful lot of food was wasted and we never looked forward to one meal. All of the fruit was out of a tin and the same goes for the vegetables. The waiting staff were charming and tried to do their best. The worst food I have ever encountered on any of my extensive travels. Eating out at lunchtime obviously added to the cost of this already expensive holiday.

Sylvia, our Tour Manager, was very cheerful and did her best, but we noticed that she ate very little of the food as well.

I witnessed a dispute about a final account between a Just You guest and the Owner of the Hotel on our last night and the Owner resorted to shouting at the top of her voice and gesticulating wildly. Very professional indeed. The dispute should of course have been sorted out by Just You before the last night so as to avoid their client embarrassment. This did not happen.

I will think very long and hard about whether or not I would take another Just You holiday and I would not recommend Just You to a friend. I will write a formal letter to the Company.

Hi Jennifer, sorry to hear about your experience.

I was due to go on this holiday in July and they had changed the hotel as i understand it due to contractual reasons. I didnt go in the end due to health reasons however being a member of JY community foir several years, i understand that this holiday is quite popular. Im sorry the hotel was such a disappointment. I have been on 4 JY holidays (Croatia Istrian Coast, Cilento Coast, Paris x 2), and all of them have been great.

I know what you mean about JY not checking the hotels they use. Mine in Apulia, whilst spotlessly clean was noisy. You get what you pay for is very true, and whilst JY can indeed be cheaper than others, there are some out there catering for solo travellers that do check their hotels. Generally the standard of accommodation is better than JY with the associated slightly higher price. But you will not find dilapidated buildings and dirty pools.

I always thoroughly research a JY hotel before booking, but of course this does not help if they change it, as in your case, before you travel, and I do not think their booking conditions will let you cancel if they change hotels.

Better luck next time, if there is one, or with another company.

This is an interesting review of the Magnificent Lake Garda tour that JustYou offer.

My first ever JY tour last year was the Highlights of Tuscany. This was a most enjoyable tour, made all the better by a quite superb hotel. A family owned 3 star hotel with marvellous service from the owners and their staff, clean and well kept rooms and superb food.

As a result I had looked at possibly booking the Lake Garda tour for next year but will now avoid this, if they do not change the hotel.

A company as big as JustYou should have a specialist Hotel Contracts team, who check out all hotels and negotiate on price.

I used to be involved with the Quality Grading of hotels in Scotland. Your description of the Hotel Bel Soggiorno makes me think that it is probably a very poor 3 star hotel and definitely not 4 star as mentioned in the brochure.

It will be interesting to see if JustYou change it for 2015 - it is in the new brochure.

I was at the same hotel on the 9 September with JY. I have already posted that I did enjoy my first holiday very much, but I do agree with a lot you say about the hotel.

I was lucky to have a lake view room, so was quite happy, but I agree some of the hotel was very run down, and the management were very obstructive to any requests. We were flooded during our week, and some of the lower basement rooms were flooded out. I think some guests had to return tothese rooms as there was no other rooms vacent, so they said. I think this was disgraceful. Sylvia did her best for them. I would not have accepted these rooms in the first place, they were very dark with outside view at all. However I was determined not to let this spoil my holiday, I didn, t find the food too bad, and the salad bar was always nice, however I do agree 4 star is not correct forthis hotel. I have put this in my report to JY.

I am glad that JY are looking into this. I was also on this holiday and can endorse all that Jen has said. In fact all the group felt the same. I have been on 10 JY holidays so know the standard is much better than this. I looked this hotel up on the net when we got the letter about the change of hotel and was not looking forward to going. As the hotel had already been changed because of poor food we did not expect any problems however the food was poor and flavourless. It is the first holiday I have been on where members of the group stopped coming to dinner and went out.

The rooms varied from dark to lake views. I was given a very dark and depressing room and asked to change. I was given a room out the back which was lighter. This was in a row of about 5. The access was on the 2nd floor through the fire door. Usually lights were on outside but one night when returning to the room, as I went through the fire door, it was pitch dark and there was no sensor light. The lights to switch on the individual light outside each room and the lights all along these rooms are inside the room. Fortunately I do not have any mobility problems but trying to negotiate steps and put the key in the door was not easy.

I was also worried about the safety issue as members of the group were reporting problems with the electrics and I had a lamp that had dodgy plug in the wall which worked sometimes. During a severe storm one afternoon water poured from the roof into the top floor of the hotel which was also a concern.

This was my last break from work until next summer so it was very disappointing.

If you want to go to Italy and also be assured of a first class hotel, I can thoroughly recommend Calabria. You will not be disappointed with the Grand Hotel San Michele - enjoyed it so much I am thinking of going back!

It is 4* not 5* because the way their family home has been extended over the years, they do not have any rooms with walk in showers.

Hi all,

just wanted to pick up on the comments regarding whether or not we check out the hotels we use. We try and get to as many as we possibly can, there are very few hotels in the JY brochure which we have not personally inspected.

For the few that we have yet to get to in person we work very closely with local partners. On this occasion it seems like what we were told we were getting didn't live up to your expectations. My team are working very closely with the customer care team to work through all of the comments that we are receiving about this departure - we can then decide what course of action we will take.

I can absolutely assure you that we take the standards of your hotels VERY seriously, I dedicate a huge amount of time reviewing questionnaires in order to make sure we are constantly improving where we have an issue.

Yes Douglas,

I always have to add a flight from Glasgow. Re this hotel, if you do go ask for a room at the front or sides. The back rooms look out onto a cliff face!

I was with Jennifer on this trip and will say that Lake Garda is beautiful, what a shame the holiday was spoilt by such disgusting food. I am not a cook but I serve up better food to myself than I ate there. Just You ,if you want to go and check the food out make sure you go with one of the parties as other people staying independently at the hotel were served different food to us. I never thought I would envy someone having chips with their dinner. One of the reply's, Sylvia I think, said "you get what you paid for" well as a pensioner I paid a lot of money for substandard accommodation & food. I could get better food in a greasy spoon cafe, as we used to call them. One last thing I am 5 ft 1 and I had a wardrobe that went right up to the ceiling, fortunately I had some hangers of my own and was able to hang my clothes up as I could get their hangers down but not back up again. This was not my first holiday with JU but I will not be recommending you and seriously doubt I will use you again.

Given the bad reports about this hotel, should JustYou not have a "space" on these Forums to let members know what the outcome of their deliberations are??

This would also apply to any other tours that had similar bad comments.

I, for one, would like to know what hotel they will use for this tour in 2015.

Unfortunately we don't have the resource to manage a space to show the outcome of individual tour feedback. Where hotels or other aspects of a holiday are changed, the website and subsequent brochures will be updated accordingly.

Jennifer. I can reiterate more or less word for word what your experience was in Lake Garda.

I wrote a separate letter on 2nd October and am still waiting for an acknowledgement!

I went on the 23rd September and was very disappointed with the whole experience. Lake Garda itself is lovely and Sylvia the Tour Manager was absolutely marvellous.

I will not be in any hurry to risk another holiday with Just You.
