Hi Julia/Elisa,

Just to say that I think the "star ratings" for threads are not a good idea - firstly virtually no one is using them, secondly it is easy to click on the wrong rating if you do decide to rate a thread (especially on a phone) and thirdly, someone has given my Borneo review (and also AbbaDave's) a measly one star!!!!!  I am not impressed!  But seriously they could be used maliciously to downgrade someone's thread or to get at them.....

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Bob,

I am afraid star rating is part of the system we use at the moment but will have a look to see whether there is something we can do.

Kind regards,

Elisa

Hi Elisa,

Thanks for the info.  I see that some kind person has given it a higher rating as I'm now up to three stars!!  And before anyone asks, it wasn't me as we can't vote for our own threads!

All the best,

Bob

Hi Bob

Are you sure you can't vote for your own thread?!

No offence to anyone but I do not rate the threads by the star ratings, I have inadvertently hit the stars sometimes as it's the way my hand is onthe iPad, personally I am not interested in them or to use them.

Sometimes it is easy to jump to conclusions Bob!!!! I looked to see if I could find any information about star ratings - I couldn't. So I reckoned it was a cumulative rating system and it was me who, as I thought the reviews accurately described our Borneo and Singapore adventures, gave both you and Dave a "measly one star", thinking others would add to it. (Jaya already had a few stars) Oops! Sorry you were not impressed!!! I hope JY will take your comments on board and if the star system is to remain perhaps some easy to find instructions will help prevent similar confusion. Hope we are still friends?!!!!!!!

From one who went through her school days hoping to get just one gold star!

Hi Kedi,

Consider yourself given a gold star by me - you are forgiven!!  Your post did raise a smile here, these things can be confusing!  I've given Dave's review a five star rating, which means, taken with your one star, he now has a three star average!!  I see a couple of others have rated my review since so my overall star rating has risen further!  I still do think star ratings are an unnecessary addition to the Community and hope JY will find a way to remove them from the system in due course.

All the best,

Bob

I agree Bob.

I had wondered what they were for and how people got them.

What a strange idea to have ratings for people's reviews !

I am guessing this is similar to the "like" button you see on other forums, in yammer, facebook etc. Some people will use it some wont. I actually think its quite a good idea as it draws your eye to the popular/better threads.

I don't think any of us write reviews to get 5 stars, we write them to let others know what we thought of a holiday and JY publishes them whether they are good or bad.

I don't think rating reviews is a great idea. So many interesting styles and opinions is what makes JY reviews so useful. Full marks to JY publishing negative as well as positive reviews. This is not done by other companies.

It's like being back at school again. Having recently returned from Croatia (yesterday) I was going to write a review but I am now seriously reconsidering. We are not all English language/literature graduates and I do not wish to be assessed on something that is supposed to be helpful to those reading it and not necessarily liked by everyone.

I should just point out that it is not just reviews that people can rate but all threads - in the Ask your Editor forum, someone has given the helpful Age Group thread just two stars and the equally helpful Luggage Labels just one star!  I know it's part of the software package being used but I do think it should be removed asap.  Roger, I wouldn't let a possible star rating put you off writing a review - and if you look at the Reviews tab you'll see that of all the reviews that have been rated, they almost all have a high number of stars!  I agree with SarahS, it is great to have a variety of views and opinions expressed in the posts - and well done to JY for allowing critical posts to appear, it shows that they really do take customer care seriously.

All the best,

Bob

Please don't let ratings put you off writing a review. Few of us are perfect authors, especially when the tying gremlins get going.

Well I think that is a pity RogertheRed - nobody is marking you on your grammer (although 1 or 2 of the regulars might try) they would be marking you on how useful they found your thread. I don't honestly see what the big deal is. I imagine 90% of people will not bother to rate a thread. Also the ratings apply to everything in the forum - so no discrimination there. I would not be offended if someone rated my thread a 1 star - I most likely wouldn't notice. I am also reliably informed by my nephew - that this is what all the "cool" kids do.. so maybe this is an age thing lol

I hate the star rating idea.  I had hoped that this was a grown-up forum, free

from the 'pack mentality' you see so often on other social media.

This is supposed to be a helpful and supportive forum - not a popularity competition.

I know some regular contributors here have a 'following' and deservedly so.

But lets not discourage others who also have something to say from time to time.

I think JY is pushing this forum in the wrong direction.

One thing I've noticed is that since I started this thread a lot more threads have received a star rating!!!

Hi

Roger, please do not let the star rating system put you off from posting a review. Lots of forum users love reading reviews - personally I love reading them all. I guess Just You are unable to do anything about the star ratings as this is built in with the software.

Bob, you gave Dave's review one star, but did not give me any! Only joking....

I'm voting with my feet and not rating threads.  No offence,  I will make any comments  in writing

Must agree with others on here the star ratings are pointless. People post on here to help others and to judge what they write is silly.

Hi Mick, nice to see you back on the forum again!

What is going on now with people rating threads?!!  I see a lot of threads on this forum and also the "Say Hello" have been rated one or two stars - these have just been done over the last couple of days, since before that the vast majority of threads had no ratings at all.  Some of the reviews have also been given low star ratings, which I think is particularly unfair, so I've given them a five star one to boost their rating (I don't have the time to go through the other forums to do the same!) - I think if you were new to JY and/or the Community (or just an occasional visitor to the forum) and saw all these low ratings it would put you off posting anything!  So whoever is doing all the low ratings, please stop - it's not nice!  And JY, I really do think you should find a way of getting rid of them asap.

I am very sorry I ever started this thread as very few threads were being rated until then!!!

Cheers,

Bob
