Hi there

I have recently got divorced and am not going to accept sitting at home moping. I am probably one of the younger people looking at JY holidays however, as much as the Eurostar breaks appeal, I would like to go further afield. My question is, as a bad flyer, do we check in as a big group on flights or individually? If individually, what are people's thoughts on me asking for a travel buddy to keep me calm on the plane? I flew to Aberdeen from Gatwick in March and it was the first time I had flown without valium since 2004!

I am hoping to book something up for next summer once I can decide where I want to go!

If you read all that, well done for getting to the end!

You book in individually but there is usually a JY rep there to assist if required. Short haul holidays its a matter of looking around the airport for others with a JY l on their bag. Long haul you all meet in the executive lounge but obviously seats are allocated by then (its after check in) so no guarentee who you sit with.

Whatever you decide to book you could possibly use this forum to arrange to meet someone prior to check in then you could go through together and get seats next to each other. From my experience you'll meet lots of friendly people of different ages on your holiday.

Hello and welcome to you. I am so sorry that you do not enjoy flying. I DO NOT like flying either BUT I will not let it stop me seeing this world of ours, I have never had to resort to drugs , so poor you. As Mick says you book in at the airport individually, but there is a JY rep to hand to ease you through this procedure, so it could be you might be able to wait by the book in with the rep and they could ensure you sit with a fellow traveller perhaps?. Or if there is a tour you fancy as Mick say maybe you could post the trip and see if any fellow travellers make contact and buddy up that way. I have overcome my fear by doing many flights I have even done Australia, I do hope that you can sort this out so you can join a JY tour as they are good fun, fantastic tours and great people to meet along the way.

GOOD LUCK

Cindy

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to us lot on the Community site.

Please don't feel worried. You know we have all 'been there' - our circumstances may differ but the one thing we have in common is that all of us want to go on holiday. So No, don't sit at home moping - go on holiday and have a great time.

You will make new friends of all different ages and this is never a problem. Your tour manager will take care of you and make sure you are included in everything and you will be safe.

If you are not great with flying, I am sure there are ways round it - i.e. making contact through the Community site prior to your holiday as Mick suggests so you will have someone to travel with specifically.

Or there are coach and Eurostar holidays to Europe as well as short-haul trips. You can gradually work your way up to long-haul if you want to. It really is Your choice.

There must be somewhere you have always wanted to go. Well now you can. So go for it - I know you will be glad you did and will never look back. There are some fantastic places out there for you to see.

Also, all this holidaying is very addictive. The more you see, the more you want to see.

Have a great holiday (let us know what you choose) You are worth it!!

Be happy,

Best wishes,

Lesley

PS: throw the Valium in the bin - you don't need it !

Hi Sarah,

like you, this year was my first time on my own, but i refuse to sit around anymore and want to make the most of things. I too, dislike flying and wasn't at all sure that i could or indeed wanted to fly on my own. However, as i didn't want to sit around moping and needed to prove to myself that I could cope on my own, I booked to go to South Africa, on the basis that if I could do this, then I could do anything. I have to say that it was the best thing i could have done. The holiday was amazing, the JY tour guide was very supportive and the group were very friendly. I was worried about checking in, as i have never had to do that on my own before, but once again it proved to be easy. Please don't worry and take the plunge, you will never look back.

Hi Sarah

I'm not thrilled about flying either but spent a very interesting outward flight to Milan chatting to a French lady which took my mind off the "travelling alone" bit. I had a fantastic time at lake Como with JY and then found myself sitting next to a nice looking young(ish) man on the return flight who was very interesting company. That helped enormously with the unpleasant turbulence as we approached Manchester!!!.I also had two of my fellow JY companions sitting behind me. Just get chatting to whoever is next to you and that will serve as a good distraction from the flying bit!

Hi Sarah,

I am in exactly the same situation as you. I have recently come out of a long term relationship and can't wait to start doing all the things I always said I'd do. I am also probably a younger traveller. I'm not a great flyer either but like the idea of meeting with everyone before flying so you know you've got some support. Which trips have you been looking at?

I've just booked my 4th trip with JY. Each time I'm just as nervous as the first time, check in procedure, is my luggage overweight, flying in general and meeting a whole new group of people!! However don't let your fears hold you back, I have always had a fantastic trip and many happy memories. Choose somewhere you have always wanted to visit and go for it. Good Luck.
