I know lots of you are experts on this part of the world so I'm picking your brains.   I am doing this holiday in the second half of June and have absolutely no idea how much money I need to take.   I plan to get a money card loaded with Canadian dollars but for the US section of the holiday would I be able to use it in an American or Canadian ATM and get US dollars or do I need to take US dollars with me?

When it comes to calculating what I shall need, I don't usually buy postcards or souvenirs but I do like a glass of wine or beer with my dinner/supper.   I also hope to be able to go up the CN Tower and on a helicopter over Niagara Falls, both of which are optional extras and weather permitting.

I'd be very grateful for people's advice.   I already know that I need to get a Canadian esta and will be tackling that in the next few days so it is just obtaining a money card or cards which has me wondering for now.

Ann,When you are in the US you do need US Dollars, the few places that change other currencies are likely to have high exchange rates.I have been traveling there for over 30 years, and British credit and debit cards are accepted, allowing for the currency conversion rate. However a reasonable amount of cash is necessary for tips, taxis, snacks etc,it depends whether or not an evening meal is included in the tour, but,I usually allow USD 75 to USD 100 per day,a mixture of using cards and cash.I admit I do buy souvenirs, but, the cost of dinners, outside of the cities can vary quite a lot, depending on the type of meal you want.

Bear in mind that both Canadian and US displayed prices do not include sales tax which varies from each Province/State,and any tips so you can end up paying 20-30%more than the advertised price.

I agree with Keith's estimation per day, I only deal with cash, but do take a credit card and bank card just in case they are needed, do inform the company's where you are traveling to. When I went although we went to the CN tower we didn't go up as the weather visibility that day was awful so there was no point going up. I did go on the helicopter and also the boat trip at Niagra well worth doing both and there is time...this is a great tour which I have done twice in different style 2006 and 2014. Any other questions just ask.

Yes I would agree that £100 USD a day will cover you for most eventualities - it is the tips and the  coffees that add up!!

Many thanks for your advice. I have now got my Canadian eTA (very quick and easy) and must start thinking about money.
