Enjoyed reading your blog Mick. Sadly for a woman alone things would not be the same. I think a woman traveling completely alone would have to be extremely careful and would not be able to do some of the things you have done and be safe.
I do think this is a bit misleading, its the 'fear' perception more than the actual threat. When backpacking across Australia and solo through America, I found that single girls outnumbered single men travelling alone. Not one of them that I met said they at any time felt in danger, but I do remeber there were times when I felt 'uncomfortable' in certain places.
Women and men can face the same 'dangers' it's all about being sensible whether your a man or a woman. Being a man does not make you autmatically safer travelling, than a woman.
Statistically, men between the ages of 18 -25 are more likely to be attacked when alone, than women. Thats a Home Office statistic, unfortunately for some reason it's not 'politically correct' to advertise that men need to take precautions when out alone, as well as women.
It has been said many times by other posters that using Yust You is a safe way to travel alone for 'women', but I would also add that it's also a safe way to travel for 'men' also.
