I think more trip reviews would be useful so here are my thoughts on my first JY holiday this month. I’m not the fussiest person so don’t expect picky complaints.

Croatia wouldn’t have been my first choice from the wide range JY offers but I was trying to do something different and the convenience of a flight from Edinburgh swung it for my first trip. I arrived at the airport early (no traffic delays when you leave home at 4am) and there was no sign of a JY rep when I checked in my bag. That wasn’t a problem and things went more smoothly than I expected given Edinburgh Airport’s reputation.

The one hour transfer from Pula airport with an informative guide called Anna was efficient. In the evening those few of us met up with the rest of the group and Ivana, our excellent TM for the week, who had had the longer transfer from Zagreb. We were about 28 in total, half a dozen of us men, with a range of ages that was probably fifty years youngest to oldest. We all mixed well through the week.

The Ramisens Hotel Excelsior was comfortable and clean and well placed for the town and the ‘beach’. The buffet meals were good, not the best I ever had but no complaints. I think the two criticisms the hotel gets in reviews elsewhere are justified, the high price of drinks and traffic noise in the street-side rooms. Those who had a sea view were treated to some wonderful sunrises.

All the excursions were excellent. We were broken in easy on the first trip to the neighbouring resort of Opatija, some of us chose to walk back along the promenade. Plitvice Lakes was a very long drive away but worth it. Loved the voyage to the islands of Cres and Krk and I thought Ljubljana was lovely. Pula and Rovinj was a great trip too, lots of us would have liked to spend more time in Rovinj. Unfortunately the last excursion to a hill village didn’t happen due to lack of takers. Maybe the amount of hard walking involved had been over-emphasised but we’d spent a lot of time in the coach. The lazy day we had was good too.

Overall, it was an excellent holiday. The weather was better than normal for the time of year, high 20s most days. It should probably be noted that a few of us got insect bites.

All that remained was a flight back to Edinburgh into the teeth of Storm Ali. I understand that we were the first to land after some flights had diverted elsewhere. It was shaky but we got down safely enough. Good job Jet2.

I’ll be looking to do it all again soon 🙂

Hi there.  I'm glad that you have a nice time in perhaps my favourite part of Croatia.  Excellent to hear that the Edinburgh people flew into Pula.  The transfer from Zagreb is a real pain.

I'm glad you liked the excursions although it's a shame that there weren't enough takers for Motovun.  I agree totally that there is not enough time in Rovinji, I love that place.

Yes.  The hotel drinks prices are expensive!  I had a seaview room when I went last, and the sunrises are awesome.  I like Lovran but I do wish that JY could go back to Rabac which to me is so much more a holiday location.

Hi Duncolm

Loved your photos. The girl with the seagull statue brings back lovely memory of my 'Discover Italy and Croatia' trip. We stayed in Opatia and the hotel was near the promenade. I would love to see more of Croatia one day.

Regards

Jaya

Hi Donna.

If it helps there is a small supermarket (turn left going out of the hotel), just a few minutes walk from the hotel.  I hope you have a great time.   🙂

I took part in this holiday a couple of weeks ago. Agree drinks very expensive and they won't let you take your own water in the restaurant. No tea or coffee making things in rooms, even premium rooms. Travel to and from Plitvice Park extremely long, left hotel at 7.45 am and did not return until 8.15 pm. Just you had amalgamated and contracted with another company for this trip and a married couple had been booked on it, not really what Just You is about. Boat trip to the islands the highlight of the trip. Also lovely walks along promenade in both directions. Food passable but often only luke warm. Very little entertainment in the evening.
