Twelve members of the group set off by bus for the beach resort at Ngwe Saung. Although previous reviews have quoted the travelling time as five hours, both our outward and return journeys took around six and a half hours, including a short stop for coffee. Approaching the resort, the road wound up into the hills over numerous hairpin bends. The hotel was excellent.  Standard rooms were very comfortable with either terraces or balconies, and located close to the restaurant.  The upgraded gold villas were right on the beach with uninterrupted views of the beach and Bay of Bengal. After a hectic tour and a long journey we all appreciated some down time.  The large pool area had plenty of loungers and parasols, as did the palm fringed beach which extends for about 14 miles. The local town was a 15 minute walk away, and is relatively unspoiled by tourism.  Early in the day, before the while it was relatively cool, we saw women street vendors carrying trays of dried fish on their heads, and monks collecting alms.  Certainly worth forgoing the sunbed for an hour!

Although there are a variety of restaurants in the local town, we ate in the hotel. The menu had enough variety for everyone: the food was very good and reasonably priced.  Lunch time snacks could be ordered from the pool bar, and we met up in the evening to enjoy fabulous sunsets and a one or two cocktails before dinner.

Despite the long journey, everyone enjoyed the time on the beach.  My only regret was that having travelled for so long another day or two would have been welcome.

Hi Sarah,

Many thanks for writing this summary of our stay at Ngwe Saung. It certainly was great to have a couple of days relaxing after a very busy and enjoyable tour. Like you, I would have loved another day or two at the hotel before embarking on the long journey back to Yangon. I found the local village to be full of interest, especially the Kokonuss Gallery where they produced good quality wood carvings for sale, and would liked to have sampled the local restaurants had we been there for a little longer. Having said that, it was difficult to drag ourselves away from the beautiful hotel when the restaurant produced good food at a reasonable price and with good service.

On the advice of TM Stephen, I took a 30 minute stroll along the beach one afternoon to see the stupas perched atop two rocks on the beach; it was definitely worth the effort!

Cheers

Mike

Much as I would love to do this add on, the long journey and hairpin bends would put me off. I will think seriously when I manage to book the Burma trip. Though, it would be lovely to relax after a hectic tour.

Hi Julie,

It was great to meet you too. I've recovered from the long journey home and am trying to decide if I can take another holiday before Chile and Easter Island in November. It looks like May will have to be ruled out, so I'm looking for somewhere in August or early Sept.

Hopefully we'll meet again some time.

Cheers

Mike

That's true about the journey. It was over six hours to get there, due to the heavy traffic in Yangon. Not only that, it was very bumpy for the four of us in the minibus.

The hotel was gorgeous, very well maintained. The food had a good range. Although the choice of food was wide, the service was very poor and the four of us had to wait some time for the next course.

We visited the local elephant park the day before we were due to drive back to Yangon.

Best Wishes, Graham
