Hi everyone I'm just back from this most enjoyable tour, seeing all the highlights that Jordan has to offer. This was a great holiday and Jordan is a safe and interesting country to visit. The people are friendly, the scenery often spectacular and the tour was varied, busy but not exhausting.

Highlights for me were having a float in the Dead Sea, visiting the well preserved Roman remains at Jerash, the amazing rock buildings and geological formations at Petra and the spectacular scenery at Wadi Rum. At Petra, there is quite a long walk over uneven ground to get to the Treasury and we walked for miles around the extensive site, so it is certainly not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. It was very impressive and there was much more to see than I had realised. For me, Wadi Rum was the highlight of the whole tour, with incredible views of rocky mountains and sandy desert.

In Aqaba we had free time and most of the tour went on the Neptune semi submersible submarine, where we had wonderful views of the coral and tropical fish in the Red Sea. A couple of the group went snorkeling instead. The town of Aqaba is not worth visiting, so if you do this tour, enjoy the facilities of the resort instead!

All of the hotels were of a good standard, with the Petra Guest House being the best. The dinners were buffet style and although most of the lunches weren't included, we were taken to restaurants along the way as part of our sightseeing excursions so we all ate together throughout the tour. The lunches had various options, such as wraps, baguettes, mezze or buffet. Be warned - in general prices are high, particularly alcohol - a glass of wine cost in the region of £7-10, with beer being a little cheaper! The flights were with Royal Jordanian and were excellent - new planes, comfortable seats and good food.

We had a small group of 18 and it was one of the best groups I've travelled with - everyone was friendly and mixed together extremely well. There were just three men and the ages ranged from 30-80. As is usual when you travel outside Europe, a couple of people had tummy problems but nothing too severe and they were sorted out pretty quickly. Our coach was full size, so we had a double seat each and there were two doors!

Finally a word about our tour manager Steve Hodgson - after ten tours, nine with JY and one with Travelsphere Steve was the first male tour manager I've had! He was absolutely excellent, very professional and organised, great fun and with a terrific sense of humour. He was also very helpful and went well beyond the call of duty to ensure that we got the very best out of the holiday. He really did sum up everything that a good TM should be and he was a credit to the company. Elias the local guide was also very good; he gave us just the right amount of information and his pride in his country was clear to see. He also had an interesting perspective, being a Christian in a country that is 95% Muslim.

So in conclusion, Jordan is a great country with lots to offer. It has suffered a tourist downturn because of strife in neighbouring countries but we all felt very safe at all times. I thoroughly recommend this holiday as being very interesting and enjoyable, with some great experiences along the way.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Julia and Cindy, many thanks for your comments. I should also mention that the weather was almost perfect! If you don't like very hot climates, November is a great time to go - the temperature ranged from around 18C in Amman to high 20s in Aqaba. We had a couple of heavy showers one day in Amman, but it didn't interrupt our sightseeing and we had sun and blue skies for the rest of the tour. It could be a little chilly first thing in the morning and at night, so a fleece or something similar would come in handy.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Bob

I am so pleased that you enjoyed your Jordan tour. Jordan was my first Just You experience and it still has a special place in my heart! I loved Jordan and would not mind going back again some day. How did you see Wadi Rum? Just wondering since the Jeep safaris have been stopped.

Regards

Jaya

Hi Jaya, I hope my review brought back lots of memories! We saw a good bit of Wadi Rum, although of course I would have liked to see more! Some people camp out for several days there but we still saw fabulous views - we were taken to a viewing point and could see for miles. We also had tea with the Bedouin and a buffet lunch; it was fascinating to have a glimpse of their nomadic lifestyle. I should also mention it was very interesting to see Shobak Castle, a real Crusader fort and Little Petra was also worth a visit. I didn't do the Petra by night tour as I was pretty wrecked after wandering around Petra all day to go back again after dinner. Those who did go said it was an "experience" - I don't think it quite lived up to the billing! We fitted so much into a week it felt like we had been away for a fortnight!

All the best,

Bob

Hello Bob

What a great review you have posted. I agree with all you have said and thoroughly enjoyed this holiday with a really good group. We also had a lot of good natured fun. I haven't laughed so much for a long time. It has done me a world of good! It did seem more like a fortnight. I am still living it - looking at the CD we were given and my photos and have already heard from two of the group.

I hope you met up with your two friends and had a good journey home. Here's to the next time!!

Best wishes.

Hi Carol,

It was lovely to meet you and yes we all did have a lot of laughs! I should also mention that those of us who use the forum did a lot of good PR for it, so hopefully a few more of the group will use it in the future!

Cheers,

Bob

Great review Bob, as usual you've covered the tour really well. Just to think a week ago we were all in Petra.

I agree absolutely with all Bob (and Carol) says about last week's tour and can really recommend it to anyone thinking of going to Jordan. Was fabulous to float in the Dead Sea at the beginning of the holiday and then swim in the Red Sea on the last day.

My favourite stop was Petra, I think we were lucky in having a guide who knew the site so well, that as well as the obvious we were taken a bit off the main tourist routes and clambered around some bits where there were no other tourists. Like Bob, I didn't do the Petra by Night, but understand that I didn't miss much. If I ever get a chance to go back to Petra would love to do the 800+ steps walk up to the Monastry - only 5 of the group decided to do it after all the morning exertions.

The hotels were good and I would also give a special mention to the Petra Guest House - the food and staff here were superb. Also glad we were in the hotel on the beach by the Red Sea, I know Travelsphere go to a hotel in Aqaba town, not a location I would like at all (our tour manager Steve did us a huge favour by giving us a half hour stop and tour of Aqaba town on route to the hotel - nothing at all to recommend it - so when we got to the hotel we knew we weren't interested in taking a shuttle bus back there on our last day and could look at what else was available.)

Our TM Steve was excellent, a really good group that got along really well.

Regards

Katy

Hi Katy,

I agree with all you've said! I felt a bit guilty I didn't walk up to the Monastery but I'm still very happy with all the great photos I took! The only other info I can think to add is that two of the hotels had international or three pin sockets, the other had European two pin style so bring at least a euro adaptor if you need to charge things daily.

It was lovely to meet you Katy, happy travelling!

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Bob

Your review certainly brought back fond memories of Jordan. We did not have the opportunity to see Petra by night. We also had tea with the Bedouins and an evening buffet in the Wadi Rum - we went on a Jeep safari! If I ever get a chance to go back, like Katy I too would like to walk up the Monsatry. No one in our Group did that in September 2009. Perhaps next time November would be a good time to go as the temperatures would be not as high so it would be quite comfortable to climb the steps!
