I have recently returned from an otherwise excellent  tour which was only marred by the  presence of a group of nine ladies travelling together on some sort of annual reunion.  Although mostly pleasant  individuals; despite the best efforts of our tour manager, they did not mix well with the rest of the group, creating  a "them and us" atmosphere.  I realise that if individual unlinked bookings are made it's impossible for JY to be aware of a group travelling together. However, if there is a clearly  stated policy on seat rotation,  can it not also be condition  of booking  that  groups should have regard  to the enjoyment of others.    I believe  in this case bookings were  linked so  JY should have been aware of the situation.  Half of the individual travellers were first time JY customers, so it was not a great introduction  for them to a company providing holidays for single travellers.

Hi Sarah,

I've had this situation in Tuscany a few years ago whereby I think it was 17 people were on my holiday, making up almost half of the entire group. Some of them didn't mix either and it spoilt things for a few travellers, and probably put new travellers off altogether.

I'm not sure what JY could do to prevent it happening, although you can ring a designated number for block bookings (why JY offer this option I still don't understand) as if 17 people were booking together they could have had their own tour. I also don't understand why anyone would book a single traveller holiday unless they were travelling on their own, as most other companies are cheaper than JY, even after paying a single supplement, which, although JY state they do not have, the cost is undoubtedly built into the holiday price. It's a pity they couldn't at least have been directed towards TS rather than JY.

Having said that, sometimes an individual can spoil a holiday, or two people who don't get on, sometimes it's a bit like being at school at times. I hope it doesn't prevent you booking further holidays, as in my case I just kept out of the way and refused to let it ruin my holiday.

Regards

Caroline

I certainly didn't let it spoil my holiday, but some of the first timers were a little surprised and overwhelmed.  In this case, the bookings, even if made individually, were linked, so the party had adjoining rooms, so the booking system must have been aware of the situation.  There were complaints from some of the "singles" in nearby rooms that the group was congregating for noisy sessions in one room. To be fair, our tour manager did mention consideration for others in not making too much noise late at night, but her words seemed to fall on deaf ears.     I  started this thread, so that highlighting the problems of having a large group would not detract from my review of an otherwise very enjoyable  holiday. Interesting that so far there has been no JY comment on this or the similar thread posted by Hils

Hi Sarah and Caroline

When I did the Apulia trip there were four women who had booked together and spent most of the time in each other's company. Two of them did fall out and created a disturbance in their accommodation block. Think most people were glad they kept to themselves thereafter!!! There have been two/three groups of friends on most of the JY trips I have done with varying effects on the rest of the group. The reason large groups go with JY is probably because they would not be able to get enough single rooms with other travel companies. At the end of the day, JY want to ensure that as many places as possible are filled on tours and are unlikely to turn away block bookings.

Good Afternoon SarahS,

I have just spoken with my colleagues regarding this matter and it turns out that it was an oversight on our part and we sincerely apologise.

We do have a policy on groups travelling on a Just You tour whereby we book them to go on a separate tour. But sometimes we might not know when a group have booked on the same tour if they book individually.

Kind Regards,

Mildred

I still cannot understand why friends should travel together on a singles holiday - they are missing the whole point! On a recent holiday I was on two people came as friends and stayed together most of the holiday which changed the dynamics of the group. They were the "moaners" of the group so perhaps just as well! They were on a completely wrong holiday and could easily have done the same holiday much cheaper on a Travelsphere general holiday and not Just You. OK perhaps Just you were not aware they were friends when they booked - but Joe Public being as they are - you are always going to get people who choose the wrong holiday and there is the risk it will spoil the holiday for others. The knack is - not to let it! This is easy for those of us used to singles holidays but daunting for first timers....

2 years ago a friend went on a JY Italy holiday on my recommendation. There were very large groups on the tour who had booked together and didn't mix. There were only 3 people on the tour , including my friend , who were genuinely solo travellers. She therefore saw no advantage to booking with JY and has never done so since.

JY can't do anything about it if large groups all book separately, but maybe tour managers could be trained to help in these situations ?

If two people are single who also happened to be friends or relatives, decide to book a JY holiday together, why not? The important point is that they should mingle with others in the group.

On reflection, Moderator, your reply seems to indicate that JY were, or should have been aware of the "group booking" in this case.

Good Morning SarahS,

Yes- Just You should have been aware of group bookings in this case.

Our sincerest apologies again.

Thank you for your honesty. Can I hope that steps are now in place to prevent any more such bookings on future holidays.
