Hi Julia

I really want to go on this trip but suffer badly with travel sickness I only just got to Cliento without being ill last year. Is there an airport closer than Naples as I am happy to make my own way?

Hi gailtravels,

I've just spoken to one of the holiday advisors who has informed me this is one of the few tours that we are unable to offer an alternative travelling solution for.

She asked whether or not sitting at the front of the coach helps your travel sickness at all (we have some customers where this helps their travel sickness) and if it does, we could inform the tour manager and put in a request that this seat is reserved for you.

I'm sorry it's not better news.

Kindest regards,

Julia

Years ago I used to suffer badly with travel sickness - planes, coaches and back seat car passenger and always had to take travel sickness pills which helped. Thank God I am almost cured now!

Me too. Mine was more panic attacks on coaches though, so I DO sympathiese. I actually find that I am better towards the back of a coach but try not to worry to much. I am quite sure that the Tour Managers are used to dealing with these things.

What was the cure Jaya? just the thought on a coach for that long would kill me, not only do I get travel sickness, and would never go on the seas ever again, god was I ill in Malta with Just You a couple of years ago, I also suffer from sinus problems so the air conditioning is a killer. Last year I went to Croatia with Just You and booked myself to the waterfalls trip, when I found out that was a four hour coach trip I couldn't go, everyone that went said it was fantastic, so I really do miss out because of these problems. Sitting at the front does help, but there are alot of people that make comments if I sit at the front all the time, it has happened.

Hi Julia

Would it be possible to do land only on this tour and I can make my own way? If so please could you get someone to either call me or email me with a cost for 5th June, JY have all my details. Many thanks.

Poor you, can I just say having done many tours I would not for one moment object to you sitting at the front each and every time if that would help you....There are always certain people who want to HOG the front seats not me by the way I feel happier being half way down having half the wagon in front and half behind helps me. I am sure if this was noted in the handover to the tour manager that you have this problem and as long as you are happy to share with others, that the manager could announce .....does anyone have any issues with this lady sitting here on a regular basis ...because...........I think people would be happy about it, rather than them thinking there she goes sitting in the front AGAIN...

I hope this posting sounds ok and you can get what I am saying.

Hi

When I did this trip last September the journey from Naples to Cetraro took about 3.5 hours, including a half hour stop after a couple hours. Coming back was about the same. The longest excursion trip was about 1.5 hours to the Sila mountains.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I understand that someone was going to try and make contact with you today. If you haven't heard anything, please let me know.

Hi Gail

Not sure what the actual cure for travel sickness was, but one day it just got better. Sitting in front of the car and the coach helps plus not reading whilst the vehicle is in motion. I still have problems with the sea - I think the sea does not like me and this is the reason why I would not go on a sea cruise. Years ago I could not even read on a train, but now I can. Don't let this problem stop you from travelling. I am sure people will understand if you have to sit in front of the coach. The other thing that helped me was sitting still and not talking a lot! I always used to make sure I had a plastic bag with me just in case!

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments, it doesn't stop me from going on JY holidays, I have loved every trip I have done and met some lovely people. V was lovely last year when I went to Croatia and I did sit in the front most of the time. It does limit me but I try to do what I can.

Yes Julia someone did call me and thank you for asking, not sure if it is an option as it makes the holiday quite expensive, but I will think about it.

Hello, Gail

I'm sorry to hear about your travel sickness. It does make me wonder, though, if Calabria is really the place for you.

I have just been watching "Italy Unpacked" on BBC2 with Andrew Graham Dixon and Gino ... (his name escapes me and I don't want to go downstairs and check it in the Radio Times), which featured the stretch from Naples down to Calabria. It was fascinating - the history and the food of the region - but it did bring home the fact that the roads are VERY winding and clinging to the sides of the mountains. I went to the Amalfi Coast 3 years ago (with another company) and, even though I do not normally suffer with travel sickness, I found the bus journeys almost too much at times (even with travel sickness tablets on hand).

I have the itinerary for this holiday as I have already booked it but don't know exactly what bus/coach travel is involved (apart from the journey from Naples airport to the hotel) while one is down there. Maybe Sylvia (sjm 533) could give you some advice on this but it does concern me that, even if you managed to get there somehow, would you really be able to get the best out of the holiday or be stuck at the hotel all the time because you were unable to cope with the day-to-day travelling? You might, on reflection, find that another holiday with less bus/coach travel and on less twisting roads would suit you better.

Hello Gail,

Sorry to hear you are not going to do your top choice holiday but am sure you'll have a great time whatever you decide to do.

Hi Ann

Oh dear! I do not think I am very good with winding roads. I have already booked the Calabria trip and will just have to hope for the best. Despite almost being cured of travel sickness, windy roads do make be a bit queasy at times. I will just have to be prepared!

I have done 3 hours of that journey getting down as far as Cilento (did that in a mini bus last year) and I can remember it being mostly motorway to be honest.

Good luck folks and I DO sympathiese!!

Hi Gail

Don't let travelsickness put you off doing any trips.Although I am usually OK on a coach I have always suffered with motion sickness.

I have always been very seasick and I was extremely ill when I was on a horse being led on a leading rein by a Masai guide when I was on a Kenyan safari. Last year when I went on an elephant safari I was that worried about being sick on the elephant that I took travel pills--I was absolutely fine.

However, when I went on my one and only cruise which was to Alaska I felt grim within a few hours of sailing on calm water. Travel pills didn't work--so rather than be ill all holiday I paid about £30 for an injection off the Ship's doctor and it lasted all week.. Ace!! My health was then probably better than most other passengers on the ship.

So my advice is if you can get a jab/injection if you know or think you are likely to be ill go for it.

By the way I am a frequent JY and Travelsphere traveller.. Was scared silly when I did my first holiday, like many others.

I invariably read the threads on the community, but had never registered to send e-mails but after your comments I was spurred on to reply because of all my problems with motion sickness.

Kind regards

Diane

Thanks Diane, I will never go on any kind of boat again, just standing in the water makes me feel sick, I can't even watch waves on television. I have also been up Mount Etna and couldn't understand why I felt so bad until I quickly got down and realised what it was. Thanks for your advice and it's interesting how many of us do suffer with this problem. Unfortunately it does stop me from doing some of the trips as they are either very long or on a minibus.

Take care and may be we will meet on a JY trip one day.

Best wishes xxx

Hi Jaya,

It must be me, but I never noticed that the roads were "windy". But being on the west coast of Scotland they are never straight for more than half a mile! Try sitting in the middle of the coach so that it is not too obvious where you are going, and you will very likely be OK. The trips to Belvedere and Diamonte took about 3/4 hr at most, none of the others apart from the Sila mountains took very long, possibly hour or so. The streets in the towns are narrow but at that stage there are the shops and houses to look at, and you are going slow anyway.

The scenery is stunning, you'll forget the road.

Hope you enjoy it.

I really wanted to go to Lake Bled at the same time as you, but I have decided to go in October to see the Autumn colours. Be nice to meet up again one day
