Hi

I'm off to Iceland for the new year with JY, but i have encountered a problem obtaining the Icelandic krona. Apparently you can't buy krona at the moment for some reason. Will there be an opportunity to get some money when we arrive as presumably the whole group will have this issue.

Do they accept euros at all?

Do you have an advice please

Thanks

Lucinda

Hi Lucinda,

You should be able to exchange currency into Krona at the banks or withdraw from an ATM. Major credit cards are accepted in hotels, larger shops and restaurants but please notify your card issuer before you depart to avoid any problems. Euros are NOT accepted in Iceland.

I travelled to Iceland earlier this year, and from my own experience it was difficult to exchange currency over the counter. I ordered mine from the Post Office, a friend ordered their through their bank. Both took a couple of days to turn around the request. Others in the group changed their money at the airport before we flew.

I hope this information helps.

Kindest regards,

Julia

There is a current ban on buying Icelandic Krona outside of Iceland, imposed by the Icelandic Govt back in September. They want to limit the currency 'out of country'. Good article explaining this in The Telegraph Sept 2013. Might be available at H'row, otherwise upon arrival. Hope that helps!!

Hi Julia

Thanks for the info, I have tried the bank with no luck and the post office suggested I take sterling travellers cheques. Would these be accepted? I'm not sure whether cash would be better. Just worried about not being able to get any money, as JacG has said there is a ban on buying the krona.

Thanks Lucinda

Hi Lucinda,

I have been advised that Travellers Cheques are not recommended and it has been suggested that you take US Dollars or Pounds Sterling to exchange into the local currency when you are in Iceland.

Kindest regards,

Julia
