How much local currency would you recommend I take (and are there restrictions on how much can be taken in & out of the country)?

What's the recommended way to take the rest? Is there a plastic travel money card that's particularly accepted in China (or any that aren't)? Or should I get old-fashioned traveller's cheques?

I haven't got a clue so any help much appreciated,

Other Community users recommend a small amount of yuan in cash - around £50 (you can buy it from your bank or the Post Office) - as well as taking sterling cash and changing it to yuan when you get to China. Remember that just about all of your meals and excursions are included, so you won't need a lot of money - just enough for drinks, souvenirs, tips and any other sundries.
