Hi I am going to America in September and am thinking of taking a Credit card that you load with cash here in the UK but can then use in cash machines and shop in the USA. Has anyone had any problems using this method which appears to be quite popular now.

Hi Jane

I haven't used one of these cards myself but I hear they are fairly reliable. Are there any other Community users out there who could offer an opinion?

Kind regards,

I got one to Use one a couple of years ago in New England. I wasn't happy with it as I had to pay $4.50 for a cash withdrawal (I think this might have changed) and shops would not accept it. they looked at me as if I had gone mad. When I recently enquired at a bureau de change I was assured that there is no charge now for cash withdrawla (but you need to check that) and that it is more widely accepted. personally I wouldn't bother. I have $15.50 left on my card (couldnt get it out at an ATM as minimum $20) and will try it in a shop to use it up when I go to the USA later this year

I went to the States about 3 years ago with a friend who used one of these preloaded cards. She did experience some difficulty as not everywhere would accept it. Of course, things may have moved on since then but I would recommend simply using your debit card in the ATM (and of course advising your bank before you go so that the card isnt blocked). Have a great trip.

I too used this form of payment last year and there was no problem at all. All was fime in New orleans , Memphis, Nashville, and Chatoonooga.Everywhere i went on this trip accepted the card from restaurants, shops to hotels.I have just topped my card up for my trip to the US in October and hopefully it will work as well as it did last year. Obviously I shall take cash as well but I find it much better than travellers cheques.
