Hi Olly

My Mum, aged 85, would like to travel with me to China in the Spring. I am not sure if the holiday would be suitable for her and would love to hear from anyone who has been on this holiday. She is reasonably fit for her age but couldn't walk long distances. I am also concerned that there might be a lot of early morning departures which she would find difficult. It sounds a very packed itinerary and I am worried that overall it would be too tiring. Any advice would be very welcome.

Hi Mad

It's a difficult question. If you're mum is fairly fit I don't think she would have any problem with the walking. Just You holidays are suitable for people of all mobility levels, and we make sure our customers don't have to do more walking than they are comfortable with. However, there might be some steps to climb - up to the Great Wall, for example - and I don't know how she would manage with those.

Also, our China tour has quite a busy schedule and there will be some early mornings, so she might find it rather tiring.

So while I think your mum would enjoy this holiday, I think there are other Just You holidays that your mum would enjoy much more.

Many of our European holidays have a mix of included and optional excursions, so she would be able to pick and choose which excursions she wanted to do. If she found one day a bit tiring, she would be able to relax the following day. If you'd like any suggestions I'll be happy to help.

That said, I haven't taken this tour myself, so maybe some other Community users will have a different opinion.

Kind regards,

Olly, your editor

Mad I totally agree with all that Ollie has told you, I am 70 and reasonably fit but I did this trip in September and whilst it was very enjoyable it is quite hectic as there is so much to see and you are out morning afternoon and evening and there are no free days. also remember there are 3/4 internal flights and a 4 hour train journey, please do not think I am being rude but I think probably something less hectic and not quite as far would be better for your mum, it would be a shame if she went all that way and did not get to see the sights. I had to forgo 2 places because there were too many steps. Kind regards Jeanette.

Hi Olly,

It's great to see the Community page up and running again. I have missed you and seem to have been waiting ages for your return.

The new look took me a bit by surprise - but I am sure I will get used to it with a bit of practice. Do I need to take a course? Wow to the Smiles - don't tempt me....

I hope to get the information I need now in time for my next trip.

So watch this space - because like you, I will be back!

Be happy,

Lesley

Hi Lesley

Thanks, it's good to be back.

I know it will take a bit of getting used to but we're all very confident that it is a lot better than the old Community.

I'll be posting a few tips on how to get the most out of it (but you'll probably know more than I do within a few days!)

Kind regards,

Olly, your editor

Hi Olly,

I'm just about to book up for this trip in April and it looks a very busy tour. I'm a shopaholic and wonder if there is time to shop for souvenirs? I've looked at various websites and see that silk and pearls make great presents to bring back. Appreciate any tips from previous travellers.

Need I say I'm really looking forward to it!

Thanks,

Joy

Hello Joy

You'll find lots of things to buy in China. Have a look around one of their markets if you get the chance and you'll find all kinds of bargains and fascinating items. Silk and pearls would both be good souvenirs or presents, but you'll also see lots of jade jewellery and ornamental buddhas. I'm sure other Community users will have some ideas too.

Kind regards,

Olly, you editor
