Having done a tour of Canada with Travelsphere, which was excellent I have booked and paid for a South African tour leaving in March 21st. Any advice or tips would be appreciated especially about taking money and vaccinations needed, cheers, Harry

Hi Harry

You might want to change your Name title so it doesn’t show your email address...

Your best bet regarding vaccinations and health care etc is to speak to your doctor or practice nurse for them to advise you, JY nor is travellers can recommend healthcare.

I have not been on this tour so I am not sure of what money is needed...I have travelled around the world with JY, I usually work out what meals are included and then work out a rough amount per day for eating and comfort stops along the way, also don’t forget and souvenirs and tips ...it all mounts up..

Have a great time and don’t forget to leave a review..

Hi Harry

You will need South African Rand for South Africa and if you are thinking of doing the Zambia add on then you will need US$. Look in the Reviews section and you will find reviews of this trip.

Hi Harry,

referring back to your earlier request, sorry I haven’t responded before now. Xmas and ‘things’ getting in the way ..!

I’m sure in the meantime you’ve researched SA regarding the questions you raised.

However, my thoughts would be ...

Clothing - October and March weather conditions don’t look too dissimilar, so requirements probably much as you suggest. For me, the only time I required something warm was for the morning drive to Kruger which starts before sun up. I did the walk on the second day which set off after sunrise. So, no need to go overboard on the ‘warm’ gear I wouldn’t think.

Plugs. - I took two SA adapters and tended to charge phone/iPad/camera in the evenings. The camera battery ran out one shot too soon on the last day as I’d finally worked out how to use the video function (thanks Carolyn) !

If you’ve got a spare take it, as Kruger affords too many video opportunities and it would be frustrating to ‘miss’ something memorable. I’ve recently bought a second battery for my Canada trip and may even get a third.

Money. - I took plenty of Rand and a credit card just to make things easy. Work out how much you need for excursions. Then add a decent amount for ‘tips’ (there’s quite a few). Several lunches/snacks and souvenirs and that should cover it.

I’m not sure if you’re doing the Zambia add on, but different requirements there, so maybe check some other posts for tips on that and also euro plugs, travel cards etc.. There’s sure to be some useful pointers out there.

Have a great time in March. It’s a cracking holiday !

Nhs website "fitfortravel" has good advice for SA. Kruger is high malaria risk, so need Malarone or similar (Asda cheapest). Not usually any side effects. Nurses at surgeries not always up tl the minute....Hope that helps.

Thank you RogerT for your advice which I have only just seen. You are first to mention this and was told no vaccinations and thought that was it. Good job I have a doctor app tomorrow so will get prescription. Phew, just in time as off next Tuesday.

Hi Harry,

Probably too late to tell you now but I'll try.

You will find it is much cheaper to get your Malarone or similar at a supermarket pharmacy. Asda have an excellent service, you simply have a chat with the pharmacist and he/she will sort you out. No doctor's prescription needed plus they were the cheapest I could find. The guy I saw was really helpful advising on Sun lotion etc. as well.

South Africa is a brilliant tour, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Best wishes Sue

Hi Harry

If you are doing the Zambia add on then you will need US$. When I did this trip I did not take any malaria tablets. To be honest I did not see any mosquitos in Kruger but there were some in the bedroom in Zambia though not the ones that cause malaria. But once the room was sprayed and the hotel plugged in the mosquito deterrent then all was well. They had the deterrents in most rooms but mine was missing and I did get bitten on my forehead as I can't sleep with my face covered!

Have a fantastic time.
