Hi,

I am a new member and I am travelling to Pompeii on May 10th.  This will be my first holiday abroad on my own.

I have chosen to go with Just You because they specialise in the single traveller experience and I am hoping

to enjoy pleasant company and make new friends.

Pompeii has always been on my wish list and I am looking forward to seeing in reality what I have only seen

on television.

I would be very grateful for any tips on being a single traveller for the first time and also anything

specific to visiting Pompeii.

Regards,

Mayflower

I hope you have a great time in Pompeii.  I wrote a review of my trip in October  2015. If you stay at the same hotel in Pompeii as we did, it's  an easy walk back to the site if you want to,spend some more time there to explore independantly.  Also, on our trip, we spent the morning on a guided tour, then had the opportunity  to  spend more time  before walking back to the hotel. Don't  miss the optional excursion to Herculaneum, to get another perspective on life before the volcano  erupted.  There is no shade at the Pompeii  site, so  take a sun hat,  use plenty of sun block, and take water with you. You will be mainly walking on cobbles, so comfortable shoes with non slip soles are recommended.  Anything else, just ask.

Hi Mayflower

This is a great trip. Pompeii was ny first trip with Just You in 2014 and it was really enjoyable. Be aware that you will need good shoes as both Pompeii and herculeanium are very uneven underfoot. Lots of walking as well. Pompeii has not much shade so be prepared. If you love the programs you have seen on TV then you will be amazed at how big the places are and how well preserved it is.

Capri is a beautiful island and the amalfi/ravello tour is a scenic drive with wonderful views and shopping galore. When you get to ana capri you will be directed to a church that has a mosaic floor. It is well worth the chance to see it.

I went in June and it was very warm every day. The roof terrace at the hotel is a lovely way end an evening.

There is an unmissable gelateria on the main street on the way to the ruins at Pompeii. You can't miss it as it is bright white inside and out. They had so many different flavours it was amazing. Think my group were just about their best customers that week.

Any thing else that you would like to know then please ask. There are reviews on this trip on the forum so have a read of those.

You will have a fabulous time

Hi SarahS

Thank you for your reply to my post, with your helpful suggestions.  As you can imagine my first trip abroad

is daunting but having contact with people who have experienced the holiday is a great confidence booster.

regards, Mayflower

Hi Mayflower

I agree with Sue - both about the trip and the gelateria 🙂 It's called De Vivo and it also has a patisserie and a bar. Like Sue's, my group also made it our second home during our visit. Its past the cathedral on the right hand side, about half way between the hotel and the gates of the ruins.

I also agree about the excursion to Herculaneum - personally I enjoyed it more than Pompeii itself as it's more compact and somehow more atmospheric. I hope you have Laura as your local guide because she is a total force of nature!

The hike up Vesuvius is also well worth the effort (again - very comfortable, closed toed, shoes are a must because it's a steep, loose, cinder path) I can also recommend the chair lift in Capri if you don't have a problem with heights, but you may not have time to do that and the church with the mosaics.

Have a super time - as Sarah says, if you put 'Pompeii' into the search box at the top right of the page, you'll find reviews, hints and tips from several of the community's Pompeii veterans.

Happy to help if you've got any other questions

All the best

Mandy

I think you've chosen a great tour for your first experience of JY. I hope it will be the fort of many

HI Mayflower;

How was your trip to Pompeii? I will be taking the same tour on June 7, 2017 - OMG its only a week away. I am so nervous - but an excited nervous. I would love to hear what your thoughts were about the trip and any suggestions you have. I have lots of sunscreen, great walking shoes and a big sun hat, but any other things I should know, shoppin, eating or anything else.
