Hi Rose,

Somehow I missed this post when you first put it up!  Yes this is a new tour for JY but it should be great!  I did Vietnam and Cambodia in 2013 and absolutely loved it.  Although the itinerary is somewhat different, here's a link to my review as it might be of some help.  Any questions you have I'd do my best to answer them!

Hi Rose,

Thanks for your reply!  I'd say yes - definitely do the Cu Chi Tunnels as you don't have to go into any of them - a few of our group did but we were too large to fit in most of them (and the Vietnamese have already enlarged them for tourists!!).  There's quite a lot to see there and it's very interesting.  I went part of the way into one of the bigger ones but then changed my mind as it got a bit too claustrophobic for my liking!  There are lots of exhibits, tanks and other things to see and the guided tour was very good.

All the best,

Bob

Re socks I have only ever worn them once and I did not get on with them at all.....so have never worn them since I have travelled as far as Australia and New Zealand I have never had a problem. I do ensure that I move around the plane when I can. You could always get a pair and give them a go, then make up your own mind. When I am on a hectic JY tour I do take a small aspirin a day, as was once told that helps, also put a thin layer of Vaseline up your nose it's meant to help stop germs getting into your system while on long haul flight...but then again these could be old wives tales.

Have a great holiday

Hi Rose,

A chap I know from a previous JY tour who is my age (mid 40s) got a DVT on a flight back from Rio to the UK!  It travelled to his lung and he had to go to hospital on his return. He's otherwise fit and healthy, so it really can strike anyone.  I use Scholl flight socks and find them comfortable.  My doctor said that she advises anyone over 40 to wear them on any flight that is longer than four and a half hours.  They also keep your legs fresher and not feeling achy after the flight, so I strongly recommend them.  If you have an aisle seat, it is easier to get up during the flight but obviously you can't guarantee you'll get one.  On all the tours I've done, I'd say that probably around half the people wear them but I don't think it's worth the risk.

All the best,

Bob

Hi Rose

I am with Bob on  this one. I wouldn't dream of doing a long haul flight without wearing flight socks. I don't think it's worth the risk by not wearing them. I wear the Scholl flight socks, I think Boots have their own brand. They cost around £13 a pair but once you have them it is a capital investment because they will be there for your future JY holidays. You may well become addicted to JY, as many of us have!

I take the small aspirins, too, as Cindy mentioned.

I don't always have time to reply to posts but I think your post regarding compression/flight socks is extremely important as it concerns a serious health issue.

I went to Vietnam in 2014, loved it, didn't do the Cambodia add-on but a friend who did preferred Cambodia. Of the 18 or so in our group who did the Cu Chi Tunnels only one person went down them.

Enjoy your travels

Kind regards

Di

Hi Rose

Like Bob I wear flight socks for all long haul flights. I have a family history of DVT and my GP recommended them. It is down to personal choice but it is better to be safe than sorry.

One further comment on flight socks, which I also believe are a must, is DO remember to put them in your hand luggage particularly on your return flight as you won't want to put them on until  necessary......seems so obvious but you'd be suprised how many people forget. I believe I actually possess 3 pairs, due to a "lost" pair being replaced by a pack which had 2. There is some comfort difference but I don't recall brands. However, I also find very useful an old pair of slippers or hotel style ones for a long flight. Nearly everyone takes their shoes off (even though there is the danger of feet swelling), but walking around a plane in flight socks only is not pleasant!

A very Happy & Fun-filled New Year to all travel addicts!
