Hi,

I'd like to do the Japan trip next year, but I can't decide whether to go in April or May. I don't want to go when it's hot and although the weather in April looks cooler than May, I'm wondering if it'll be too cold...but then the pics of the cherry blossom in April look amazing!!

Has anyone got any thoughts, that'll help me make up my mind?

Thanks advance,

Kate

Hi Kate

I think it is only you who can decide as to when to go. If you want to see the cherry blossom then you have to go in April, but if not then May. On the other hand, the weather worldwide is so unpredictable nowadays that you just have to take a chance as to when to go. I have not yet done this trip but would like to do so in the near future. If you do go, please write a review on your return.

I went in May 2016, it was lovely and sunny for about 1/3 of the time. It rained 2 days, and the rest of the time it was overcast. It may be identical, or totally different next year.

If you go in April it will be chillier after dark, and will be darker earlier, but you will get to see the cherry blossoms.

Hi Kate

One immediate thought: does it have to be April or May? JY also go in October.

I went to Japan last November to experience the autumn colours - which were stunningly beautiful and, to my eye, at least as good as the cherry blossom, if not better - and the autumn season lasts much longer than the cherry blossom season, so one has a better chance of catching it. The autumn  weather in November was nearly perfect, with only two short showers, lots of sunshine and wonderful views of Mount Fuji (not guaranteed, of course!). I've not been in October, but I would imagine that the weather then would be at least as good, if not consistently better.

I am not sure whether the autumn colour extends down to central Honshu by the second half of October but, if it does, this may be worth considering - at any rate, the October 2016 JY departure looks to be very popular, with only one place left for this year.

Whenever you choose to go, you'll enjoy Japan, it's a fascinating place.

Hello Kate,

I went in April and we walked around in light fleeces most days. Temperatures were between 16 to 20 most days. Sadly we missed most of the blossom. The ideal time to see the blossom is March.

You will have an amazing time.
