Hi All

Am getting various and extremely conflicting information in respect of which vaccinations and type of malaria tablets are required for the Amazon part of this trip.

If you have been on this trip please can you advise of what you and others were recommended in this respect

Thanks

Janet

Hello Janet

You really need to book an appointment with the travel adviser at your doctor's surgery, most surgerys have a travel nurse who will be able to tell you exactly what vaccinations you need and what type of malaria tablets you will need take, if I remember correctly you will probably need Malarone for which you used to need a prescription, but I went 8 years ago so things may have changed since then.

Have a fantastic holiday

I think your best bet is to visit your GP to get their advice. Go at least 8 weeks before you depart. Some surgeries run a travel clinic and they can give you up to date advice. I think some of them use the www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk website if you want to look it up yourself. With regards to malaria tablets it's more a case of what suits you. I personally always take Malarone wherever in the world I go - although the most expensive at around £2.25 a tablet they have the shortest course (2 days before and 7 days after) and I have never suffered any side effects. They also seem the most popular amongst the groups I've travelled with.

Although I haven't done Peru, I've done the Amazon in Brazil and can say you will have a fab trip and see some amazing animals / birds.

Thanks Avocet and Sally for your advice

Thought it was probably Malerone but a friend that is also going on this trip was advised that Chloroquine is sufficient. The NATHNAC site advises that it depends on where in the Amazon Basin you are going in relation to Brazil or Bolivia border. Seems best for me to take Malerone to be on the safe side!

I had also not thought about Rabies vaccination being a requirement but again it seems that it is being recommended to my friend.

The doctors surgery that I attend is a very small one and previous travel advice does seem to be a bit hit and miss which was why I thought to ask here of previous experience. I think, to be sure, I will aim to find another travel clinic in my area where I can get the most up to date info.

Thanks for your good wishes in respect of my holiday and I hope that you both have a great time wherever you are holidaying also.

Thanks again

Take care

Janet
