Is anyone else going on this tour, on 27th October? I'm beginning to get very nervous about malaria, dengue fever etc!

Hi Marion,

I'm going on this trip. I wouldn't get too upset about dengue fever, malaria etc. As long as you take sensible precautions it should be okay. I visited my local travel clinic and made sure all the normal vaccinations were up to date and I've bought some anti-malaria tablets as it looks like we could be in and out of both high and low risk areas. I also got some tropical strength insect repellant but apart from that I won't be bothering with anything else. I've been to Vietnam before and had no problems.

I'm just looking forward to the trip now!

Cheers

Jim

Hi Jim

What vaccinations have you had? I'm having trouble getting mine sorted, as my travel clinic can't fit me in until 14th Oct. My other option is to pay at walk in clinic at local hospital. I'm really worried as I get bitten very easily, and I'm getting too nervous to look forward to it! Do you think malaria tablets are necessary?

Hi Marion,

I just made sure that the normal travel vaccinations were up to date ie. Hepatatis A, Typhoid, Tetanus. I needed a booster for Typhoid but all the others were ok. I was offered injections for Japanese Encephalitis and rabies but as far as I am concerened as long as I take the precautions the nurse suggested everything should be ok.

On the subject of malaria tablets, it all depends on how you feel. According to the itinerary and some travel health websites, a few of the areas we are going through are high risk areas for malaria. Will we be in them long enough to be worried? I'm not sure but the nurse at my travel clinic was of the opinion better safe than sorry so I went along to my local ASDA pharmacy and bought enough for the trip. On my last trip to Vietnam some of my fellow travellers didn't bother with tablets and as far as I know no one had any problems.

Cheers

Jim

Thanks very much for your help, Jim. I'm kind of looking forward to it, but I'm sure I'll be a nervous wreck the few days before going! I'll look at the fitfortravel website to see what sort of malaria tablets are recommended, I seem to remember reading that some of them are no good in certain areas. What part of the country are you from? I'm on the south coast, and in fact have never lived anywhere north of London! Thanks again, Marion

Hi Marion,

The anti-malaria tablets I have always used are called Malarone. You can buy them without a prescription. As I mentioned previously I just went along to the pharmacy at ASDA where I filled in a simple form and bought the tablets there and then.

I live on the south coast too, in Portsmouth.

Cheers

How weird, I'm also from the Portsmouth area!! I grew up in Liss, near Petersfield. Went to Portsmouth High School. My father's family were always avid Pompey supporters, unfortunately my mother's were scummers! I worked in the London area for a few years, and am now happily living in Weymouth where I've been since 1980. I'll look out for the malaria tablets. I'm actually in London atm, so am going to check out the shops for mosquito nets etc. Best wishes, Marion

Hi again Jim

I went to the large Boots at Piccadilly Circus, but they wouldn't give Malarone without a prescription. I'm now back in Weymouth and have tried my local ASDA. They say I have to have a consultation with their nurse, so I'm hoping to sort that out this week. I'm going to Hayling Island for 10 days at the end of the week, not too far from you. Would you like to exchange email addresses, which I think we can do through Julia? Mine is *******************. Best wishes, Marion.

Hi Marion,

At my ASDA I just filled in a form saying where I was going and for how long and was told come back in 15 minutes to collect the tablets.

My email address is *****************************

I saw your question to Julia about what clothes to wear etc. Normally, I believe, mosquitos are more active around dusk and dawn so you could probably get away with wearing shorter tops and bottoms during the day and just cover up for the evening.

Cheers

Jim
