Afternoon all,

I am going to China on August 7th - I can't wait!

Sadly i broke my wrist playing football last week and have been in a cast since Saturday (fibreglass - below the elbow).

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of flying long haul wearing a cast?

Is there anything i should be doing other than contacting the Air company (Air China)?

The NHS guidelines and my fracture doctor say I will be safe to fly?

I just hope i can hold a pair of chopssticks in my left hand!

many thanks,

Jack

p.s. anyone got any Gatwick Hotel recommendations? Fancy meeting up for a drink / pre-adventure fuel on the 6th?

There is a Premier Inn and Sofitel Hotels on the airport...think Premier is the cheaper of the two..

Regarding flying and being on holiday with a cast, when my son flew in a cast one of many,he had to travel with a fit to fly letter which I am sure we got from our doctors? might be worth a phone call or chat to you travel insurance company it would be awful to get to the airport and be refused.

Good luck..

Hello Jack,

Sorry to hear about your wrist. Main problem is the cast- most airlines want it split to allow swelling during the flight. Do not turn up at the airport as they will not let you fly if it is not split . My eldest went to the British Grand prix last year with her wrist in plaster- had a great time in the rain, take lots of plastic bags to cover it. She of course could not carry anything which will be your problem.

Hope you have a great trip and not too many problems,

Jan.

I flew with Thai Airways in December 2009 with a broken wrist in what sounds like a similar plaster - I needed a "fit to fly" letter from the hospital. apparently Virgin and BA would not have let me fly so i suggest you contact the airline ASAP. My biggest problem was swelling at altitude - I was told to keep my arm raised ...... not very comfortable long haul London to Bali via Bangkok! Luckily I got a window seat and the crew let me have a pile of pillows to rest on. I agree with Jan (above) - I took a large roll of freezer bags with me. Good luck!

Hi Jack,

I broke my wrist last year, fortunately my time in the cast didn't coincide with my Just You holiday! Apologies if you know about them already, I ordered online a 'Limbo' waterproof cast protector - it made the shower/bath a whole lot easier! I believe they do one to protect against the rain as well ( I just used a carrier bag).

I'm sure you will have a great trip to China - it was my 1st Just You tour nearly 5 years ago.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I'm going to ask my hospital for a fit to fly letter when i have my next appointment. I e-mailed Air China who im flying with and they do request an official covering letter from your Doc.

I will look into getting waterproof covers asap.

I amgoing to ring my insurance company this week and make them aware of my medical situation so im covered.

p.s.

Thanks for the hotel advice Cindy.
