Hi

No I havn't yet, I love dolphins so I am seriously considering that one, when I went to Bulgaria last year you could book optional trips at the resort so I am hoping you can also do this on this one, have either of you two got any ideas on this subject. Like you Lyn it seems a long way off but of but will come round quick !

Ali

Hi Ali

Like you I also love dolphins, but have read on this site that it's all day travelling and seeing the dolphins is a bit ???? Therefor I am thinking will wait and see when I am there + after 3 days safari might feel like a chill out!!!

Lyn

Yes, that sounds like a good idea think I will be all travelled out as well and need of a rest, as you say will wait and see. Ali x

Hi ladies - I've not booked any excursions yet - thought I'd wait and see when I'm there.I can't wait now and need to look into vaccinations and things. Can anyone clear up about yellow fever jab for me please? I know you don't need it for East Kenya but am not sure if you would be refused entry into another country if your passport is stamped Kenya and you didn't have a yellow fever jab certificate? Be difficult to prove which area of Kenya you had visited.

Hi I have looked at this site www.fco.gov.uk where it states it is not needed for mombassa but there is a risk for the Tsavo game parks that we are visiting, so I think I will have it just to be on the safe side

Hi Guys,

I did this trip in Sep/Oct 11, I was told my my Local Nurse that Yellow Fever for where you are going is optional, its totally up to you, I didn't have it and there were no problems, malaria tablets are a must.

To clear a few things up about the dolphin safari,You don't get to book your trips until you arrive at the hotel in mombassa after the safari part, so you have until sunday to think about what you are going to do. I did this and had a great time, you leave the hotel around 6am, its about a 2-2.5 hour drive to the boat, the last 15km is down a dirt track, you then get onto the boat, have breakfast and then spend the next few hours searching for dolphins, once you have seen the dolphins and had lunch the boat then goes to a reserve where you do some snorkling, I was lucky enough to swim with some green sea turtles (wear a t shirt when swimming), you get off the boat around 4pm and head back to the hotel, its a long day. 6 of our group went on the trip 3 of us had a great time the other 3 hated it (it was the travelling).

I would say if you want to see dolphins and possible swim with sea turtles then go for it. I would also suggest you do the 1/2 day mombassa trip, get your wooden figuers when you visit the co-operative, don't buy from hotel shops or beach traders or the masi warriors who put on a show in the hotel one evening, the co-operative sells the figures at 4 times less than everyone else.

Have a great trip

[Thanks Martin - I found your comments really useful. Always good to hear tips from travellers who have already done the trip. Did you take Kenyan currency, dollars of sterling please? Thanks Babs

Hi Babs,

I took a selection of all 3 currencies, I didn't use the dollars, I took about £1000 in total (400 in $, 400 in £ and 200 in Kenyan Schillings) I used the Kenyan schillings at the Lodge and in the Hotel, paid for the trips in £'s and then just changed the £'s if I ran short of kenyan schillings.

Hello all,

I have been following about every Kenya topic here for a good month and I have finally decided to sign up. The comments on this board are very encouraging and it looks like it is getting close to selling out. I don’t want to miss it because I am indecisive.

I haven’t been on any organised holidays so far and this will hopefully be a great experience. I have a bit of an interest in photography, so a safari will be something to look forward to.

Cheers,

Lars

I would say there is a great orphanage near by ..by children with aids, which myself and some ladies went to visit they love to see people, also take some cheap encils And colouring books as when tur out Nd about the kids love to get them or taxi drivers get very excited to have something to take home to their kids...

Top tips..... Beware the toilets are a challenge for us LADIES.. So make sure you pack plenty of wet wipes, travel packs of tissues and hand cleansing gel......

Directions to the Tumaini Children’s Home

The Home is situated in Bamburi, north of Mombasa town (about half an hour’s drive from the airport). Look for signs to the Bamburi Cement Works, which is just off the main highway (Mombasa to Malindi/Kilifi road). Turn left at this point and head towards the cement works. You will pass it on your left – a couple of miles on and a few roundabouts later you will see a sign for the Home on the right hand side of the road. Go down this narrow track and you will hear the children laughing – follow these joyful sounds! Sirio School is situated directly across the track from the Home. The Clinic is joined to the Home but has a separate entrance on to the track.

This is we're I visited, I went with 3 other ladies we took stationary, and the bathroom samples from the hotels...we did have a little collection for money from the others on tour and make sure you get a receipt. 1 of the ladies I visited with on the JY tour went back a year later and done voluntary world there for a while.....

we visited a orphanage whilst in Mombasa, Lioness cubs orphanage it was called near mombasa, we too took stationary coloring books etc and many many pens, take lots of pens with you as they are like gold dust to the kids as they cannot go to school without one, our guide/driver even stopped at a local store for us to purchase a few things, we even took plasters and medication for them, there are many orphanages in the mombasa area, have a great time

Hi Babs, not sure if you saw my previous message so thought i would send again just in case...Are you travelling from Doncaster as I am from Sheffield? I have booked the national express and plan to go from Meadowhall once I can choose my location - you are more than welcome to join me if you havent arranged anything? 🙂 Angela

Hi Angela - No I didn't see your earlier post. That sounds great - not sure what I'm doing yet, as my daughter has offered to take me and fetch back, but I know it' arrives bacvk at Herathrow very early morning and it seems a bit unfair on her. . National Express sounds a good idea. Have you paid your fare yet, as you could maybe have got a lift if she insists on taking me? What time bus were you planning on getting? Babs x
