I am new to this forum. I am thinking of going on the Vietnam tour in March 2013. First time travelling on my own. Any advice or info would be welcome, regards

Hi Treez,

I've just booked this hol for Feb next year - the March date didn't suit and I think the weather might be a touch better in Feb. Really looking forward to it! Obviously I can't give much advice as I haven't been, but from what I've gleaned from other posts - take US dollars and you probably won't need to use their currency the dong (which I think is about 30,000 to the £!!), go to your doc in good time to see about what vaccinations you will need, bring anti-mossie spray with 50% DEET and maybe the wristbands as well, take a memory card for your camera with plenty of space, keep an eye out for fellow travellers at the airport (with the distinctive JY tags on their luggage!), don't be nervous or shy as everyone is very sociable - oh and have a brilliant holiday!

Best wishes and maybe see you in Feb if you decide on this date instead!

Sorry can't help you re Vietnam holiday as I have not been on that one. I have been on 8 others and had a great time on them all. Is there anything in particular you need answers on?.

Great fun holidays fantastic sights to see, new friends to be made, and lots of eating and chatting?

I did this trip with Cambodia add on in March this year and really enjoyed it. This was my 3rd trip with JY and, like the others there was a good mix of people who made a great group. They all had a common goal and that was to enjoy the experience whilst being able to share it with like minded people.

If you have any specific questions regarding Vietnam or this holiday I would be happy to help.

I am going to Vietnam and Cambodia in Sept could you let me know what clothes to take as I don't want to take too many. Also did you take Malarone for malaria (some do and some don't ) I have spoken to my doctor but thought you would know best. Any other tips would be a help. Really excited about trip. Tricia

Tricia, hope this is of some help.

Most of the time you need comfortable clothing to cope with a range of conditions. Most of the time when I went it was warm to hot, especially in Southern Vietnam and Cambodia. Also took some smart casual clothes for some of the evenings.

As far as malaria protection, you are right, some took Malarone or alternative, some used 50% DEET. My surgery advised that anti-malaria drugs were not totally necessary and so I used 50%DEET from Hoi An onwards.

Hope you enjoy it as it is a great trip.

Hi John

Please can you advise me about Malaria tablets as although I have been to see the nurse at my travel clinic it seems a bit confusing about the regions. She is telling me that I won't need any in Vietnam but maybe I will in Cambodia. What did you do ? Look forward to your reply
