I'm still thinking over which Grand Canyon tour to do in May and I was wondering if any of you who have already been on the Golden West holiday, could give me any advice as to which is the best one to do? I know of course, that the final choice is mine, but it's so difficult choosing between the 4 tours on offer ~ thanks guys

Don't know if its still on the list but the glass walkway I thought was nothing special, just as good views looking over the side of the canyon.

Thinking the same question myself - going September from Mancehster - what did you opt for in the end and any suggestions - I think the glass walkway one is out!

Hi I did the Golden West a little over two years ago and did the three-in-one GC tour. We all took the coach from the Stratosphere very early in the morning (I think shortly after 4am!) and drove to the regional airport. We took a small plane (20 seater) to the rim of the canyon with views of a great sunrise and the Hoover Dam. We then had a short helicopter ride to the bottom of the canyon, followed by a short boat ride (maybe around 20 mins). Then we took the chopper back up to the rim - when the pilot heard that we were all first time heli fliers he took us a slightly longer way up and went at an angle towards the rim of the canyon to give us a thrill - great fun! We then had a bus journey to various viewpoints and had a packed breakfast along the way. Plenty of time for photos and we could have done the skywalk as well if we wanted to - a few did, but most thought it wasn't worth the extra expense. In all, a very enjoyable day. I think everyone who did the GC in our group also did the 3-in-1 apart from one lady who wanted to do it cheaper and organised a bus tour from the hotel - I think it took her a twelve hour bus trip to do the journey!! We were all back just before 2pm in time to get lunch at the hotel or elsewhere.

For anyone visiting the GC for the first time, I'd recommend the 3-in-1 to get a taste of the different perspectives. But whatever you do, make sure you do the helicopter flight, it was short but brilliant!

Cheers,

Bob

Hi,

Like Bob I did the helicopter ride into and out of the canyon and the boat trip when I did the Golden West trip which was about three years ago, but I went back to the Grand Canyon about 18 months ago and they were no longer allowed to fly helicopters into the canyon. You could take a helicopter or plane ride over the canyon but no one could go below the top of the canyon.

As to whether to go by helicopter or plane, the helicopter tends to fly lower than the plane but the helicopter takes up to six passengers, three per seat, and if you are sitting in the middle then your view can be restricted. The plane flies higher and I think you get a better overall view of the canyon. Also in the plane each passenger had their own seat by a window.

I didn't try the horseshoe walk as our guide said that some people were disappointed by it and you aren't allowed to take your camera with you.
