Could anyone give me advice on the best way to take money to China. My sister has suggested one of these cards that can be loaded with cash, but it depends on ATMs being easily available. Otherwise cash, travellers cheques or whatever. Would really appreciate some advice, especially from those who've already been on this trip.

Thanks, Debi

Hi Debi,

I am going on the Wonder of China trip on the 15th March. I had this question too so asked Daniel Adams who is one of the tour managers for China.

He advised me to take about £50 in yuan and any other cash in Sterling as the exchange rate is better in China, but also everywhere has to give the same exchange rate.

You can also take credit and debit cards, but you will have to notify your bank and credit card company of the dates you will be there as they sometimes block their use if they think the cards have been stolen and are being used abroad. This is easy to do and I expect you already do this anyway. I believe some hotels will exchange Sterling but there are also ATMs which you can use. The tour manager will help you if you have problems.

One other point Daniel suggested that if you want to use your mobile phone to send texts contact your mobile phone company and have your mobile set to 'roaming' so you can use it anywhere - he thought it would be good to send photos of the Great Wall via your mobile. What a good idea!

Apparently, adaptors for chargers in China are the 2 pin continental type (although there are 2 sizes of pin for 2 pin adaptors) and the adaptors used for Australia (with the 2 flat pins).

Hope this answers your questions.

I don't know when you go - but have a great holiday and Enjoy!

Be happy,

Best wishes,

Lesley

Hi

I did this trips last year and took all my money is Chinese Yuan. Had access to a small safe in bedroom at each hotel so felt it was secure. ATMs not always easy to find. One word of caution, check your luggage carefully following flight from Xian back to Beijing as I only discovered loss/theft of a watch after I returned home. There had been some issues with fellow travellers who thought their luggage ahd been "interferred with" and one man's suitcase got "lost" altogether!.

Hope this is helpful
