Hi I am a young widow in her fifties who is very active professionally (a Chief Executive) and socially lively. What is the age profile of Just You travellers? I am interested in a Canadian Rockies tour this summer. Also is there usually a good gender balance as I don't wish to be on a women only trip!

Hi gillykaren,

I'm in my early fifties and did two just you holidays last year after losing my girlfriend :-

1. Americas golden west (june), 18 of us 7 men and 11 ladies with ages ranging from 27 to 77. I was the 2nd youngest man but would say half the ladies were younger half older.

2. Tresures of andalucia (november), 45 of us 10 men and 35 women, similar age range to the previous trip but quite a lot more at the older end, think that was to do with it been at a cooler time of year.

From what everyone tells me that are JY veterans virtually every trip there are more ladies than men so don't think you would be alone.

I had a fantastic time and made good friends on both trips as I'm sue you will. In fact I've just booked for my 3rd JY holiday to Mallorca in april.

I have travelled with JY 6 times in 4 years and have another trip booked, I started travelling with JY when I was 48. Women allways out number the men. When I went on Nashville and Memphis tour there were only 2 men.The most men on a tour I have been on is about 5-7, from a group of 25-40 people. I would say the main age range is 55-65, but the youngest I have toured with has been 30 and the oldest 80. I am always amazed at how fit and healthy some of the older ones are, they have walked and climbed much further than me at times. I hope you book the holiday and give it a go.

Likewise a widow in my 50's group I travelled to China with ranged in age from 22 to 70 and everyone got on really well a lot more ladies than men, but it probably depends on the type of trip you book

Hi

I've been on three JY holidays and I would say the age range is late 20s through to early 80s. Women do outnumber the men by about 3:1 but I wouldn't let that put you off though as you'll be travelling with like minded people. There is usually a good mix from various walks of life so you'll slot in nicely. I want to do the Canadian Rockies too, but not sure at present whether it will be in April, May or October! Go for it, you will not regret it and will be hooked.

In the 4 JY tours I have done the age group was mostly 50+ with enough

under 40s to keep it lively. There are always more women than men.

Hi GillyKaren,

Like yourself I am a young widow in her fifties - I did the trip to Australia in November - my very first trip on her own - I was worried in case it was 20's + and I would have hated that age range to go on holiday with - my trip was 34 travellers - 6 men - 28 women age range 47 - 83.

As long as you have a good holiday - what else matters - doing National Parks, Canyons & Little Big Horn this year in September.

Hi gillykaren,

I too am a widow but that doesn't stop me travelling.

As for there being more women than men on most of the trips - when I went to Russia and travelled on the train next to one of the men, he made the point that he considered women were much more adventurous than men and that was probably why the male/female balance was as it is. It is a safe environment for women.

If you go with an open mind you will have a good time. The age range and number of men and women on a trip has very little bearing on the trip itself.

As for the Canadian Rockies - great choice - I have been there - so go for it and enjoy.

Be happy,

Best wishes,

Lesley

Hi, I am also considering the Canadian Rockies tour this year. Have been away to China, also Australia/ New Zealand with JY, and have had a great time with a mix of people of all ages. Yes, more women than men, but, unless you're looking for new attachments, this doesn't really matter. I've made some lovely new friends along the way. Good luck!

Hi Gillykaren,

I understand your point about having a good balance of genders. I think it adds to the trip if the group is made up of a fairly even balance of ladies and men. I personally wouldn't want to go on a break where all the others were middle-aged men 😞 so I see where you are coming from .

I think it also adds to the atmosphere if there is a good mix of ages as well. In my experience the typical age is 40 plus.

I agree with janeyalan when she says it probably depends on what type of trip you book. I personally only do the short European coach trips with JY and my experience is that walking trips attract a slightly younger age group with a better balance of ladies and men; garden trips attract an older group with a far greater ratio of ladies to men.

Anyway I hope you decide to give it a go. 🙂
