Please. I need an honest answer from someone who has been on this tour. You can upgrade on the Rocky Mountaineer from Redleaf service to Goldleaf service. Can someone tell me exactly what the difference is and whether it is worth paying out the £500 to do it. It seems a lot of money just to 'sit upstairs' for 2 days even though, I understand, the food is better or different. What would I be mising if I did'nt upgrade? Is there someone out there who has either done both or had experience of this trip and knows the exact difference. Thanks.

Hi Steve,

You must go Gold Leaf on the Rocky Mountaineer! I did this trip 2 years ago (with a different holiday company but the trip is the same). The food is top class, with a amazing choice of dishes and taken in a separate restaurant area. You stay overnight in a hotel with meal provided etc. and your luggage is taken there for you rather than have to take an overnight bag to a motel. Drinks etc. are free, we even had chocolates made by the chefs. It is much easier to see the scenery through to domed ceiling and you are notified when there is wildlife to see e.g. bears and the train slows down for you to take photos. The whole experience is totally different - real luxury. Please pay the difference - it is well worth it. Enjoy your trip. I know you will. It is something you will never forget. Be sure to take plenty of photos! Be happy. Best wishes,

Lesley

Hello Stevmag. I went on this holiday last year and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The stewards on the gold leaf service were extremely efficient, and came round with snacks and drinks all the time, alcohol included if thats your tipple. The food was good, the tables laid beautifully, and it was nice to be able to stretch your legs when going down for your meal. The gold leaf carriages afford you the better views and you have the opportunity to go outside on the viewing platform to take photos.

In Kamloops overnight you have all your luggage with you in the hotel whereas the red leaf people can only have an overnight bag - although I don't imagine this was too much of a hardship. Also you get your evening meal.

Hope that explains a few of the advantages of the gold lesf service - I thought the extra expense was worth it, having gone that far it would be a shame to miss it. Next year I have decided to do the coach tour and the Alaska Cruise, so I can see a bit more of the scenery.

Barbara.

Hello Stevmag, I went on this holiday May 2008. I went with Just you our group where unable to upgrade to Gold Leaf due to unavailabilty of seating. So we all travelled Red Leaf. This did not take anything away from the holiday. We had our own compartment on the train, we had access to a viewing platform, had our own restroom. We where all looked after by a most lovely train guide called Doug.

The food though cold was excellent as where the beveredges hot and cold. The food and snacks seemed nonstop. We saw lots of different scenery, places of interest, wild life all with an informative commentary from Doug!. We stayed overnight at Kamloops in an hotel, yes we all took overnight bags no great hardship there. Very close by was a bar and restaurant. After we had gone to our rooms, most of us had a walk and met up with the others at the bar. The hotel laid on a basic continental, this didnot matter as when we got back onto the train breakfast was served. It would have been nice to upgrade but on reflection we didjust as well, we had a good train guide, fantastic company, scenery etc..

We had rain some of the time what you realise is it hits the Gold Leaf domes before Red Leaf!!. However it is up to you which you decide on, Just remember you will have fantastic company and journey. I hope you have a good holiday whatever you decide on. I know I enjoyed my time on the Rocky Moutaineer, I did the add on cruise this was excellent. Take care and enjoy your journey.

Lillie.
