I'm going to Thailand in September and was planning on taking some of my money in Thai Baht and some as Sterling travellers cheques. Reading the helpful information supplied however, it's recommended that Sterling or US dollars are taken in cash.

Has anyone been to Thailand and experienced any problems with local currency?

Any input very much appreciated!

I haven't been to Thailand for about 4 years, but then I took Thai Baht, a debit card for bank machines and two different credit cards. Every where you go US $$ are the preferred currency if you don't have Baht. I'm Canadian and nobody wants that anywhere but here. I use the website www.oanda.com to find the currency converter, they also have a printable wallet size currency sheet so you know how much things cost in comparison to home. When I get to the airport I buy something with the large Baht currency you got from a bank at home and get some small bills and change for things like tips, small purchases etc. Anything larger I put on a credit card, meals, shopping etc. Had no problems with getting more baht if needed from bank machines.

Be prepared for hot and very humid, Thai weather is hot and hotter, it is a beautiful country, the people are very nice.

I have a Nationwide current account and, since they don't charge on cash withdrawals abroad, I always use my debit card to get cash at the airport and to pay for tours, etc. I'm on the 25/9 departure to Bangkok.

Thanks Annette - confirmed what I thought, and that website is really excellent. Thanks for the tips.

Hi I travelled to Thailand last November and took Thai Bhat and also Sterling in notes and had no problem changing these at the local exchange offices. It was a fantastic holiday and our Tour guide Joy was brilliant as was the bus driver and bus boy. If you do have Joy give her my best wishes.
