Hi all,

we were talking in the office yesterday about Rail holidays and thought it would be good to get your views.

We have a couple of UK based rail holidays which have proven popular - is this something people would be interested in seeing more of?

We also do a few European holidays by Eurostar - would you like to see us do more of these holidays?

As ever, we are all ears!

Hi

Yes, I would be interested in a rail holiday. The ones you have at present are either not far enough, or not long enough for me. A bit further into Europe would be good, or what about trans-America?

Sylvia

I like the look of the Scottish rail holiday JY do, but there are so many more holidays higher up my wishlist that it will be a few years before I get to it. Using rail (rather than bus) to get between two or three locations would appeal as I prefer rail to bus. But I can't quite envision where I would like to take a rail trip, ?within Vietnam maybe, or Australia. I wouldn't be interested in a long rail trip to the South of France, Austria, Southern Germany etc - would rather take a plane.

Hi Will,

I think expanding Rail holidays is a good idea, especially in countries where the rail system is superior to ours (oh, that's most countries!) France (South) Switzerland, Germany, Benelux countries, all good eurpean destinations, Japan with the bullet train, cross coast US trips, and the best rail trip of all...... The Indian Pacific, Sydney to Perth!

I'm all for rail holidays as being a rail freek geek!

Although the one I want to do is across Canada from Toronto to Vancover for the 5 day trip. I know Travelsphere do a shortened version of this flying to Jasper and doing the last leg on the Rocky Mountineer to Vancover but have a cruise tagged on after Vancover, something I am not interested in.

Another one I have been interested in is the one in Switzerland. Perhaps JY might consider doing something there Wil. Spectacular scenery as well as rail travel.

Hi Eric,

thanks for that. If there is a few people suggesting the same thing then we would certainly look into it!

Hi Will/Eric,

I love travelling by train and I'd definitely be interested in the Canada tour by train - I've looked at the TS one numerous times. However, unlike Eric, I would be very interested in doing the Alaskan cruise at the end! How about the Trans-Siberian route or an Inter-Rail style tour around the capitals of Europe?

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Will

Yes I think it would be a great idea. I particularly like the thought of European rail holidays. Haven't really considered them further afield before but am sure they would be well worth looking at too. Rail travel gives you the opportunity to see some beautiful and interesting scenery etc and with the right crowd of travelling companions, which I am sure we would have with JY, it can also be very sociable. I do hope you go ahead with this idea soon.

Best wishes

Sue

I did one of the last rail holidays JY did. From Warsaw down to Krakow, Budapest Vienna and Prague. It was a lot of fun and you see so much more from a train. Lots of heaving of bags on and off trains and stairways but great. While there are lots of suggestions for long haul and therefore very expensive, don't forget the rest of us.

Hi Bob,

I saw a programme a few months ago of a couple that did the Trans-Siberian rail journey and it featured various interesting stops on route. They did East to West ending in Moscow. Was impressed at the time but now that you have suggested it, might be a another JY could consider.

Sad I know, but I do drive the things in the Uk, and have been on various trips across Russia and many eastern European countries, but you can't beat Switzerland for comfort and reliability all that and excellent scenery.

My wish list for train trips would be, Darjeeling mountain railway in India, Canada rocky mountaineer and coast to coast across a America add anything to the trips and I will be booking subject to the place of evil allowing me time off.

Trans-Siberian was the first thing that sprung into my mind. Would be great to be able to say I've done that.

Does anyone know about possibility of touring by rail through China?

Will,

Just received Travelspheres "Escorted Holiday Collection" brouchure this morning and I see that they are doing an "Alpine Rail Adventure" escorted tour of 10 days. It sounds very interesting and the sort of rail holiday I was thinking of. Lets hope JY can put the same holiday into being, something which could easily be done as Travelsphere is your sister company.

I for one would book it.

Eric.

Hi JY, When travelling by rail, do JY passengers get to sit together, (as they do on a coach), or do we just have to take pot luck with the seats (as we do on flights)? I would be interested in rail if we travelled as a group but not interested if I ended up sitting next to any other traveller - someone who wasn't very friendly or perhaps didn't even speak English (wish I'd studied another language at school :)). Hi Sue, I've been on a couple of JY hols where part of the journey was by train and the tour manager had seats booked for us together, so we were randomly assigned seats - pot luck as to which JY folks we were seated next to! Worked well and very enjoyable.

All the best,

Bob

Hi Will

Speaking of rail holidays - is there any chance that JY will reintroduce the Rocky Mountaineer leg of the Canadian Rockies/Vancouver tour? I did it in 2011 but it hasn't been in the brochure since. I know it makes the trip a little more expensive but it is sooo worth it. The two days spent on the train were the absolute highlight of a truly fabulous trip and I'd love to do it again someday.

Thinking of rail trips closer to home - have you ever considered linking up with the company who run the British Pullman of the Orient Express and building one of their day trips into some of your UK tours/weekends? It would give people who don't like long haul travel the chance to experience something similar to Swiss and Canadian luxury rail travel.

All the best

Mandy
