Just watched an amazing TV programme about Victoria Falls and the Zambezi. It has obviously been aired several times before as it's from 2009 and is probably the one Jaya referred to in her South Africa September 2016 posts. However if you haven't seen it and are intending to visit Zambia it's really worth watching - some of the photography is beautiful and the back story, telling a year in the life of the Zambezi, the falls and a fisherman, well told.

So - should be on BBC iPlayer - "Victoria Falls - the smoke that thunders" Natural World 2/14 - last shown BBC2 23 July at 11.15.

Hope those of you booked for South Africa (and Zambia) in September and October have a great time. Sorry not to be joining you Jaya, but I opted for the Travelsphere version and leave on 2 September. Having recently only travelled on singles holidays I hope to find some friendly people on the trip!

Hi Diane

Yes, I think this is the same programme I saw. It was a bit 'scary' in parts.

What a shame you are not joining me! Hope you do find some friendly people on the Travelsphere trip. I presume you are doing the Zambia add on as well. I fly out on 13 September, which means that your trip will be nearing the end. Have a wonderful time and do post a review on your return so we can compare notes.

Regards

Jaya

I am going to SA and to Zambia in November. I also saw this programme on BBC2 on Sunday. I am quite looking forward to seeing Zambezi river and the Victoria Falls.

Thanks for the info about the television programme. I watched it on catch-up last night It  gave a good insight of what to expect. I did not realize that the baboons (thieves) could be so aggressive.

I have ordered clothes for the safari to be the part. Typhoid injection today. Anti-malaria tablets to obtain. The paperwork from the GP mentions mosquito nets but I assume these are provided in the hotels if there is no air conditioning  Not long now.

Hi Peter,

I did this tour in Sept 2011 and had the most amazing time - it is still my all time favourite holiday!  The Zambia add-on is the icing on the cake, it was fabulous.  If you are staying in the Zambezi Sun hotel, there is air con - keep it on while you are out (I stuffed a piece of card into the slot!) and this will help to keep the mossies at bay but make sure you apply DEET morning and evening.  Take the Malarone after a meal that has some fat content in it, as this aids absorption.  I used to take it after breakfast as it was hard to remember to do so after dinner!

Speaking of baboons, we were advised to make sure to keep our door closed in case any wildlife got in - there are zebras, monkeys and other animals in the hotel grounds.  In a humorous manner, we were told that if monkeys got into our rooms, they would make a right mess - BUT if baboons got in they would have a party and wreck the place!  They have been known to open wash bags and squeeze the toothpaste out etc and generally go mad!  You have been warned!!

Have a fantastic time - and make sure you do all the optionals, they are worth it!

Cheers,

Bob

Hi Bob

Thanks for the advice. I'll make sure no baboons enter my room! Was there a need for mosquito nets? I have just collected the cheaper form of Malarone from the chemist. The 20 tablets were only £13 for 20 and contain the same 2 active ingredients. In Zambia we are staying at the Avani Victoria Falls Resort which used to be the Zambesi Sun Hotel.I assume there is a need for local currency in Zambia and that it can be obtained locally.
