I'm off to South Africa and was just wondering whether anybody has used a "Travel Money Card" issued through the Post Office, if they were any good and whether anybody had had problems with them.

Hi Kerry,

I haven't used the PO card but I have used Fairfx, and they are fine. Last year in Vienna I used a friend's computer and was able to top it up from my UK bank account whilst I was there - very useful!!

Enjoy your holiday.

Regards

Sylvia

Hello Kerry,

I used a prepaid world traveller card from CAXTON FX for my tour of Singapore, Australia and New Zealand last year. Never had any problems with it and it was loaded in Sterling (GBP). All I had to do if wanting any money was go to an ATM machine and draw out in local currency or pay for items, meals etc with the card in local money. Very easy to find balance etc from Caxton.

The Post Office money card would work in a similar way. I went for Caxton because the Post Office card is operated by Travelex and fees of 2.5% were deducted on every transaction were as Caxton wasn't. OK fees were taken by Caxton but ATM fees were free. They also offer prepaid cards in US dollars and Euros.

Hope this helps

Eric

Hi

Like Eric I have a CAXTON FX card and as Eric said I also had no problem in Singapore, USA & Thailand, I've also used it in Eire, Italy, Switzerland and the USA. I have my "Switch" card from current account tied to my CAXTON card and I can top up and check my balance with a text message from my mobile.

I used a Travelex Rand money card in South Africa and had no problems. With the restrictions on importing Rand it is a very safe way to take your currency in. I personally withdrew half my currency in Cape Town and the rest in Knysna.

I got one of these cards last year from the Post Office - went to Ireland - wouldn't work in a large department store or at Cork airport. worked ok in an ATM. If going to get a card, would recommend also talking a little bit of cash with you just in case it doesn't work/is not accepted and you can only use it in an ATM

I've just come back from Canada. I took a Post Office card loaded with Canadian dollars and used it both in an ATM and in restaurants and a shop and had no problems at all. I agree with Sue about taking some cash as well and I would also suggest taking your normal credit card in case of problems (having let your card provider know your dates in advance).

I've got a post office dollar card and its been brilliant. used it on several trips now. I save money on it each month for my holiday.

I do also take cash and credit card for emergencies. I also take a photocopy of my passport and travel details as well as photocopies of my health insurance.
