Hello everyone, I have booked my first JY holiday to Thailand in February, I will be very nervous as not seen the inside of an airport for several years but having read the posts on the forum I'm sure I will be fine.  One of the things I was wondering about is what is the best way to carry money and cards? I've read a lot about those bags that you wear around your waist but can go under your clothes, does anyone have any advice please, many thanks Christine

Hi Christine

I have travelled the world with JY and have had to carry vast amounts of money and credit cards etc with me over the years, I personally have not used a belt, but I have known some people who do this.. I keep my money in a wallet which then is in a zipped compartment in my handbag which then has a zip over the top this is then worn over my chest so to speak, so it wouldn’t be easy to take my handbag and the wallet is encased by two zips. When walking in public areas I have my hand closed over it as well. If I can I put everything in hotel safes when I am in the room if not everything is always with me...

Hi,

First of all, don't worry about the airport.  It was 21 years between flights for me and it didn't seem as though very much, apart from security requirements, had changed.

With regard to carrying money and cards;  I do not know about Thailand, perhaps others who have been can help, but most hotels have a room safe, or space in the hotel safe, and I leave some money and cards in that.  You can get money belts that go round the waist or over your head.  I tried the latter but it made my neck hot and sticky so go for waist ones now.  A cross-body handbag is a good idea, and if it has pockets keep them closed and  as many as possible towards your body.  You'll soon get used to it.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

Agree with what has been said so far. I use hotel safes when provided, and always have a cross the body handbag with zips- and loads of them. The only problem that I had was in Pisa when they say that you should wear rucksacks in front of you. Bad combination when wearing Bifocals, so I went flying on a kerb, not good fun 😞

Be careful of flashing your phone and camera, go with someone in a taxi and after all that, have a great time x

Hi,

I recently wore a money belt when I was on a 6 hour train journey in India on my own (not with JY), which was great - you can get them on Amazon. Re rucksacks - I now do not wear them as I was pickpocked in Russia (that was with JY) - luckily I turned round in time before they stole all my money and phone! May I suggest the Healthy Back Bags which you wear across your front. I personally do not use hotel safes (keep my belongings on me or lock them in my luggage) as I have had several occasions when I was unable to unlock the safes! You really just have to be sensible and make sure nothing is on view.

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Hils
